Postal Theft

I think that someone maybe stealing our mail. We have had only one item of mail in 6 days. We usually have mail every day. And I don't think it's the postman who's doing it. Let me explain.
We had to put a cage on the back of the front door to stop our dog snatching the mail and chomping holes in our Love Film CDs.
Now it is very difficult to get big items i.e rigid A4 envelopes, to drop down into the cage. So I'm thinking that maybe the post is left protruding out of the letter box and someone is coming along and snatching it. Our post gets delivered after I have left for work and there is no one home.
I have put an empty DVD case in an A4 envelope with my address on it and am going to mail it from work today and see if it goes missing.
Any other suggestions?

  • Contact your sorting office and ask them to ask the postie if he recalls delivering items to your house that didn't fit through the letter box? or if there's another reason why post hasn't been delivered this week?

Were you expecting something in particular that hasn't arrived or is it possibly just a lull in the volume/regularity of post?

Get a deeper cage, maybe one that's detachable, so you can still open the door fully when you need to.

This way, the rigid envelopes can be inserted properly.

It sounds like a lot of palaver, but this way, you don't have to worry about losing post, and also announcing to all the scum passing by that your house is empty.
  • The dog got smart?

You have my sympathies, I have the same problem too but can't fix a cage as the door opens against a wall. Can you accept deliveries at a place of work or change delivery to a sympathetic friend/relative's address?

I've suspected foul play with missing mail but unless you know something's not been delivered it's normally too late in the day when it finally comes to light.

Could the dog not be kept to certain areas of the house so as it cant attack your post? Then you could do away with the cage and all post could be recieved safely. Mail sticking out of a letter box is a clear indicator that people aren't home. If an unsavoury type clocks this, then the least of your worries could be an envelope being taken.

    Where abouts are you?

I'm in London and both work and home mail has been awful for around 3 months.

At home I had no mail at all for nearly 3 weeks (no junk or bills yay! no birthday cards :() then came home one day and had around 40 letters, this has happened twice now, or I get no post all week then loads on a Saturday.

Loads of stuff has gone missing that we have posted from work to - I have written both personally and from work to complain - no response yet though (ain't holding my breath!)

Why not just leave it in your postbox and see if it goes missing rather than (or as well as) posting it?

Maybe this is a daft comment, but have you gone to the sorting office to check that there isnt mail there?? In my area, a new postie "forgot" she was carrying amazon dvds for us and we had ordered a few for one childs birthday. So we never had a red card put through the door as she never tried to put them through the postbox!!

Posting something to yourself doesn't prove it is your post(wo)man because they are not the only person who would handle it, anyway he/ she would be a total idiot to steal more than the odd item of mail from each house. Definitely check larger items are not being help for you at the Royal Mail office. Have you thought about getting a box at the nearest Royal Mail Office or having your mail delivered to the local Post Office?
