Huawei G300 Virgin Mobile problem

I bought a G300 in Tesco last week and got it unlocked at a Vodafone shop at the weekend. When I'm at home I can access the internet fine (even when I disconnect from wifi) but as soon as I'm out I have no connection at all. When I'm at work the settings say it's connected to their wifi but I still can't see the internet on either wifi or 3G. I've tried some APN settings I found online but they didn't work and didn't have any joy with Tweakker either so I called Virgin Mobile and the lady I spoke to said they don't have this phone on their sysyem and to Google!!!
This is my first smartphone and I'm at a loss - can anyone help please??

This is very odd and IMO makes no sense really.

I can only assume you're actually not disconnecting from wifi, an that's why your data is working at home.

Apparently these are what you need: http://nxwiki.blogspot.co.uk/2012/02/virgin-mobile-uk-apn-settings-android.html

Does it match what you have already?

Yes, they're the settings that downloaded with Tweakker.
When I'm out, do I need to actively disconnect from wifi for the 3G to work, because I haven't been doing that?

You don't have to disconnect; the phone will just lose connection.
In the settings you have to have "Mobile network. Connect to the Internet" enabled so that "Connect to the Internet" gets changed to "Use phone for data connection when Wi-Fi is unavailable" (or something similar).

Try it and see if you are getting any data signal. It can't do any harm.

I've had a little play and it seems to be working now (after driving round and trying the 3G in various places). I still don't know what the problem was but thank you all for your help and suggestions
