How to get out of O2 contract?

My sister has had a semi-light bulb moment and currently has two phones. Why? I have no idea!!
One she uses which is Orange and the other is an O2 one. Her contract runs out in August. She's paying £40 a month for a service she doesn't use. She called them and they said it would cost her £150 to cancel contract now as her contract hasn't finished yet. Is there anything she can do? She can't sell the phone as it's broke. Any ideas?

She can downgrade her tariff to the lowest one, making the line rental cheaper.

She can pass the contract onto someone else to pay for an use (would have to be friend/family as it isnt exactly the "norm").

Pay the £150 and learn a lesson........

There's not really much you can do. Trying to give it to someone else would be odd because she's be fully responsible for any calls made, and the number would go with it, and so on. She can try and change to a lower tariff to reduce the amount that has to be paid. Otherwise, she's agreed to a contract and she has to keep paying. Next time, only get a contract if you want to pay for the whole year!

There will be no way of getting out before August.

As said, best thing is ring O2 and ask to change tarrif to the lowest line rental they have (which will be £20/month I think). Then just pay it off, and make sure in July she sends off cancellation letter in good time. Not ideal but will half it to £75.

On a positive note, the phone will be covered by the manufacturer's warranty. Take it to the nearest O2 shop they will repair it (they say 7-10 days mine took 3), then she could sell it!

Whether it will be covered by warranty depends on how it was broken - if it was dropped in a puddle, for example, or most other sorts of accidental damage, it won't be covered at all.

Thanks for all your advice. My sister called today and got her contract down to the lowest tariff. Saving herself £20 a month. Thanks.
