Rules may well have changed. I applied and was accepted this time last year. If no luck, perhaps try a different location?
Gonna try another natwest the next week or so. See how it goes.

nowadays most student accounts require your student loan to be paid in, hence it's only possible to have one. Still possible to have more than one account if the second is not a student account.

We have had bad experience with Santander online but our local branch are good and usually clear up problems quickly. Our daughter's railcard arrived very fast once some money was paid in.

As far I'm aware, most request a minimum amount is paid in every x months. You could do this by transferring the same money through different accounts.
  • I just want to make a student bank account. The bank account must have internet use i.e. I can have access over it through internet. For this what should i do?

    Here's a summary of Student Accounts for 2014/15: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/students/Student-bank-account
  • I missed the bandwagon to get a student account I think. Am I right in thinking that you can only qualify for the overdrafts and freebies if you are starting uni? I am currently with nationwide and went into Natwest to figure out if I could get a better current account for students but I didn't think I still qualified for any of the stuff? x

You can get a student account any year you're at uni. Some of the freebies only apply to 1st years, but I got a railcard in my 2nd year, you just need to check the details of the offer.
  • Just rang HSBC about their student account & they said if the account goes £25 over the agreed overdraft then they will charge a £25 fee. So MSE "No Fees" information is incorrect.

Thinking of opening one of these student accounts to get the loan paid into so I get the free overdraft, but setting up a monthly standing order for my budgeted monthly (or even weekly) amount into an instant access savings account that has a visa debit card. That way I will never exceed my authorised overdraft by mistake since the savings account will just stop letting me take out money or use debit card in shops when my monthly allowance is spent.
Any suggestions for the savings account that has:
-debit card for ATM & use in shops
-a mobile app for checking balance/statements
    -SMS/text balance alerts

    Here's something interesting...

The article used to suggest that you could open a Santander account, get the 16-25 railcard and then ditch it for a new account with higher overdraft.

However now there has been a (*) added to the Santander link all mentions of this seems to have disappeared and it states that you have to pay £500 in a term to get the railcard.

However, I have been in touch with Santander who say that once the railcard is sent out (with 4 year expiry) there isn't any way in which they can cancel it.

Make of this what you will...

EDIT: It seems that since I made this post that the mention has been added back in! ;)
  • Does anyone know if any of the banks offer student accounts for part-time postgraduate / mature students?

Everything listed here seems to be for F/T students only... fine if you're studying part time and working part time, but for those (for example) who are part-time because of having young children or other care responsibilities, the benefits of a student account would be very welcome if any were available.

    Thx in advance.
