Moving House and Transfering Supplier
Comments
-
I am moving house and wish to use my current supplier (British Gas Dual Fuel) at the new address. Unfortunatly the current supplier is EON and I have been told I must use them for a month before BG are allowed to supply me.
I phoned EON to ask about tarriffs etc only to be told that they will not discuss charges etc until I have opend an account and they have undertaken a credit check.
What a rediculas situation! Why in this day and age is it not possible to move supplier when I move and why must I open an account before costs are reveiled?
Hi swaish
I'm sorry you weren't given much help when you called.
Whilst we can't discuss the current occupiers account with you, there's no reason why you weren't given general info about our standard tariff for the area in question.
This is what you'll automatically go on when you take over responsibility.
As others have pointed out, details are available on our website and the comparison sites.
Drop an email to the address in my Profile if you're still struggling and I'll be happy to help.

BG have emailed me to confirm they have advised EON that they are taking over supply to the address and giving notice.
I accept one BG account will close and another will appear on my profile but in reality I am transfering my services.
I still think its a very poor service which is over complcated and not at all customer focused. Why should I be forced to used a supplier I do'nt want to use? The house currently has BT for telephone but Virgin will provide my service from day 1.
Why can't the moronic power utilities provide a similar service?
Eon may well reject the switch unless you are already registered with them, because you will still need to pay the for the energy used until the switch is completed. You are not transferring the BG account, you are closing one and opening a new one-your billing will not be carried over.
VM cable service runs on an entirely separate network to BT, so no transfer is required-it's not the same thing. If you switched from BT to another ADSL provider, there would similarly be a time lag to carry out the switch.
The 'moronic' utility co's have no option but to use the deemed account system which was imposed on the industry at deregulation. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Just because its like it is does not make it right. If the utilitys were customer focused they would join together and force a change to the process.
I stated in my earlier post I will contact EON when I moved in and provide them with name etc so that they can bill me.
I stated (again in an earlier post) that I accepted I was closing one BG account and opening another but for all practical aspecs its a transfer.
Virgin also provide ADSL, when my son moved into a new house he moved transfered the service from BT to Virgin ADSL and it was sorted on the day he moved.
I still think the system is rubbish and needs changing. No one in this day and age should be forced to use a organisation they dont want to when moving house!0 -
I didn't say it was 'right', I was just advising you what the system is. If you would prefer to go back to a system whereby the supplies have to be reconnected on entry of a new occupant, then fine-most of us would not.
What I was pointing out was that any 'prior' arrangement with BG is likely to fail and lead to billing errors, you'll need to request a switch only after you have contacted Eon. BG may tell you otherwise, but invariably it ends in tears. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Just like to add that you may be able to bring over your existing tariff from your old supplier to the new one when the switch takes place. We were able to do this when we moved from our flat (supplier: EON) to our new house (incumbent: British Gas) but it did take several weeks to sort out (mainly due to incorrect registration of our meters by the builder's subcontractors).Cider Country Solar PV generator: 3.7kWp Enfinity system on unshaded SE (-36deg azimuth) & 45deg roof0

You seem so determined to have BG at your new house, yet you don't seem to have done any price comparisons using approx usage figures.
Maybe EON would be cheaper for you.0 -

I am more than happy with BG. I would have considered EON if their response had not been so poor when I phoned them to enquire. If they treat a potential new customer that badly how bad will it get when they have you tied in!0 -

All I want is a system which allows me to choose a supplier and have them supply from when I move in.
I think it is totally unacceptable that I cannot do that.0 -

The Deemed contract rule is by an Act Of Parliament.
It is there to prevent customers stealing energy by not admitting to being in a property and arranging a supplier to register. By not doing this, there would be no registered supplier and the distributor would have to pay for the energy. So the whole process is based on this principle and you will note that they can't backdate your switch per this rule.
So, without it or the ability to backdate a switch, the grid would lose out and so would the taxman.:rotfl: It's better to live 1 year as a tiger than a lifetime as a worm...but then, whoever heard of a wormskin rug!!!:rotfl:0
