Moving House and Transfering Supplier

I am moving house and wish to use my current supplier (British Gas Dual Fuel) at the new address. Unfortunatly the current supplier is EON and I have been told I must use them for a month before BG are allowed to supply me.

I phoned EON to ask about tarriffs etc only to be told that they will not discuss charges etc until I have opend an account and they have undertaken a credit check.

What a rediculas situation! Why in this day and age is it not possible to move supplier when I move and why must I open an account before costs are reveiled?

British Gas can apply to take over the supply by marking you as a new occupier. That way the other supplier will not object to you leaving if there is any debt at the property. The change of supply takes 4 to 6 weeks so you can start the ball rolling if you are moving within the next couple of weeks.

Just tell Eon that you want the standard price which you can find on their website. That way you will not be on a contract with any termination fees.

You are in a deemed contract with the existing supplier from the day you move in, you can't switch until you have opened an account with them. This has been the system ever since deregulation, it's hardly new. A switch then takes 4-5 weeks, so the energy used in that period has to be paid for to the existing supplier.
Al the tariff prices are available on the supplier website or (quicker) on any comp site.

I don't think the can agree to a contract for a property that you are not a resident of legally.

They can mark the registration as a change of tenancy though.

In terms of them not discussing prices until you move in, it sounds like the sales person doesn't want to as you are not the occupant but I can't see any reason for not discussing available products with you.

When I moved, I started a switch so I moved in during cooling off period, I was on supply with the old company for 2 weeks all in all. Not bad!

Its an interesting issue. I don't think its covered in the SLC's so I wonder if the UA's cover it?

It may have "always been them system" and "hardly new" but it is neither logical or customer focused.

I cannot find the cost of a kilowatt hour for gas or electricity on the EON website, please post a link to the tariff rates you have advise are there. Thank you.

My plan is to contact EON on the day I move, report the meter reading and provide them with my name and advise I will using their services under protest until British Gas become the supplier.

They can then bill me in the usual way, which I will pay by cheque.

I am assuming BG have given EON notice that they will be taking over the supply following my chane of address notice last Friday.

Select Varible Plans, request a Quick Quote, select Energy Plan and then click show rates. Simples.

Or even more simples, use a comparison website.

No, you can't do it this way-it is not possible to transfer an account over from one property to another. BG will finalise the account at the old address based on a closing reading that you have presumably supplied and you will receive a final bill.
To move to BG at the new property you must first register with Eon, as soon as that is done you can commence a switch to BG. Unit kWH prices alone will not give you a meaningful comparison, as all the other variables have to be allowed for.
I've already pointed you to the tariff prices-just use any comp site with average kWh figures and your postcode-that is all that is required.

BG have emailed me to confirm they have advised EON that they are taking over supply to the address and giving notice.

I accept one BG account will close and another will appear on my profile but in reality I am transfering my services.

I still think its a very poor service which is over complcated and not at all customer focused. Why should I be forced to used a supplier I do'nt want to use? The house currently has BT for telephone but Virgin will provide my service from day 1.

Why can't the moronic power utilities provide a similar service?
