Ford Focus vibration when breaking through 70mph

I have a Ford Focus 1.8tdi on a 56 plate. Im experiencing a problem whoch has me at a loss. When you break either at 70mph or slightly higher and you come down through 70mph you can feel vibration through the steering wheel. I have changed the front discs and pads as they were wearing out anyway and this doesn't appear to have fixed the problem. Also, if it was the discs/pads I would expect to experience something at lower speeds too.

Any ideas greatly received

Thanks

+1 wheel balance. When i 1st started driving i have a car with a similar issue.

At 70mph it vibrated. 68mph fine, 73mph fine. But as the needle hovered over 70mph the vibrated started.

Turned out to be a remould tyre. Balancing never cured it.

Well it tends to follow. Tyre deforms or loses a weight, or wears enevenly, creates a wheel shake, driver does nothing about it, causes excessive wear on track rod ends, cv joints etc . The harmonic vibration (speed shake) then occurs at only specific speeds..

You coudl try a test of swapping the front wheels for the back ones, and swapping the side over (EI f o/s to r n/s and f n/s to r o/s and vice versa), see if the shake moves about.

Or simpler, just swap the front over, see if the shake moves. It could be a simple as losing a wheel weight.

  • Swapping back to front is a good idea, but side to side might be a no-no, if the tyres have rotation markings on them.

Thanks for the replies. I did mean to say I had the wheels balanced when I had the tyres done, I would say minimal difference. One thing I have noticed is that the balance seems t go quite frequently. The track rod end might be a viable option thinking about it.

  • Balls joint if it isnt the track rod ends.
