I'm sure the OP would be more annoyed if the shop refused to sell his grandfather the TV as he was 85 years old and they didnt feel he would need it.

Well....yeah! If anyone refused to sell him anything I would be annoyed...

More the fact that a bit of friendly advice may not have gone amiss though really!
  • I have a 3D tv but not with any intention to use the 3D feature (although we may at some point)...it was bought because reviews comparing the model with 3D to the standard HD model said the 3D one had far superior picture quality when viewing HD content. We went into a shop and saw the two side by side and there definitely is a difference.
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!

As long as the seller didn't make misleading claims, and the TV does what it supposed to do, then I don't think he has a leg to stand on.

He presumably did have the money, or they wouldn't have supplied the TV...

I remember taking my dad to buy a new modern TV.

nothing wrong with old one, thought I, but his money and he had all his faculties and he wanted one. I just drove there, he picked it. I set it up at other end.

He then made me get him Sky, including a subscription to whatever the racing channels are/were. Another total waste of money to me, but not to him, for the last six months before he died.

Considering so many places have an established framework involving rewarding sales staff for upselling with a percentage or bonus i think you had every right to be concerned.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upselling

I was in o2 and an old lady walked in with a brick of an old phone, she said her needs where to be able to call and text and she wanted a cheap equivalent to her broken phone.

First phone he took her to was £35 plus.

I thought it was pretty disgusting but i guess its established so its excepted as legitimate.

Ultimately if his happy with the tv his happy. But i would ask roughly what budget he had in mind before he walked in....

Well to be honest it was more the image of my Grandad putting on 3D glasses and watching Avatar....

Could be worse. He could be watching Brandi's Big Boobs in 3D.

Now try to get that image out of your head.

For 350 you won't get anything decent, so better let your grandfather do the shopping. The one for 350 you posted is just rubbish.. Let the old man have some decent viewing experience once in his lifetime and don't be too jealous lol
Absolute garbage!!!!!! ....unless you have pin sharp 20/20 vision and sit about 4 feet from the screen the picture on a "cheap" (£350 or considerably less!) 32" HD ready set from the likes of Samsung/Sony/Panasonic/LG WILL be perfectly acceptable. I spent a lot of time looking at larger sets relatively recently and even at 42" + when someone with "average" vision was sitting 8-10 feet away the differences were negligible....:T

You need to check your vision then because I can tell the difference straight away and your level of "acceptable" is pretty low.. When I was after Backlight LED TV it took me a few weeks before I finally found the one to please me. And I also didn't want to pay crazy money and for energy efficiency the Backlight TV was a must. Try to watch fast action movies or sport on both cheap and expensive sets and compare. The cheap sets maybe produce similar quality still images and resolution is the same, but when it comes to motion they fail badly. There are many other things regarding setup adjustment limitations so I don't want to start too technical posts on Money Saving forum as this is not a place for that. AV Forum is where you want to be if interested.

Standing in front of 2 TVs in shops like Comet or Currys and trying to compare them is the worst way to buy a TV.
