Grandfather Mis-sold TV - Help!

Hi all,

First post so be gentle!

About a month ago my 85 year old Grandfather bought a television from a local business.

Now the tele he left the shop with was this:
Sony KDL32HX753 32 inch Widescreen Full HD 1080p LED Backlit 3D TV with Freeview HD (can't post link)

This ended up costing him £700.

I thought this seemed a little steep, so did a bit of research to find a more reasonable model like this for about £350:

Sony KDL32CX520BU 32 inch Widescreen Full HD 1080p LCD Internet Ready TV with Freeview (can't post link)

Now my grandfather clearly knows nothing about new electronics, but bought the tele as seen.

The shop is saying it would charge a 10% restocking fee, along with £210 for 3 callout charges that they originally did for free (as it was over £500) - fitting installation and that. They're basically saying there'd be nothing in it after taking all that into account...

Is there anything I can do here?

This is a 3D tele with exceptional picture quality....which my grandfather clearly doesn't need!

Really appreciate any help or guidance - all feels a bit like he's been taken for a ride with money he doesn't have!

Would say mis-bought rather than mis-sold. He wanted a TV and got a TV.. Just higher spec than may have needed..

Smacks more of jealousy on your part craving the Tv that he has, or at the worse Buyers remorse!..
  • You may well be right - I may have worded it badly, but the issue is still clear hopefully...!

Haha I can't say I actually watch TV...so it wouldn't be too high on my list of must-have gadgets if I'm honest - nice ornament though!
  • Good spec TV he bought there.. Maybe a bit more what I would pay for it. I've got similar spec KDL40HX723 and I love it.

For 350 you won't get anything decent, so better let your grandfather do the shopping. The one for 350 you posted is just rubbish.. Let the old man have some decent viewing experience once in his lifetime and don't be too jealous lol
  • Ahh fair play!

I heard all his sales chatter and persuasion and it just made me want to do the complete opposite - £700 just seemed like a load for a 32inch tele...clearly out of touch!

But I shall admit defeat and retreat gracefully....ha!
  • I agree with the posters above - the tv wasn't mis-sold at all. Provided your grandfather is still capable of administering his own affairs he can do as much or as little research as he likes prior to deciding to buy something. If he wanted to buy a nice high spec tv then why shouldn't a shop sell it to them? Do you expect the shop assistant to say 'You're too old to buy this nice tv, why don't you buy a different cheap rubbish one instead'?

And I don't understand why you say your grandfather 'clearly doesn't need' a good quality television. If it provides the best picture and improves his viewing experience and he had the money to pay for it then buying the more expensive tv may have been the right choice for him. Does he actually say he doesn't want the tv now or is it pressure from you that led to approaching the shop for a refund?
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!
  • £700 seems a bit expensive.. I think £600 is what you can get this TV for.

But it's a good spec TV.

Yep, if bought online. I'd expect a £100+ premium from buying it on the high-street.

Still, for piece of mind it is a great TV :)
    Thinking critically since 1996....

You can get it on amazon for £600 but then it just turns up on your doorstep in a box...there's added value when you buy from a local retailer (personal service/advice, more accessible after-care and in this case it sounds like they delivered and set up the tv etc). Given all of this I don't think £700 is unreasonable for someone who wants that level of service.

I'm sure the OP would be more annoyed if the shop refused to sell his grandfather the TV as he was 85 years old and they didnt feel he would need it.
  • Well to be honest it was more the image of my Grandad putting on 3D glasses and watching Avatar....

But it seems I have overreacted - who'd have thunk it!

Appreciate the advice lads and ladies.
