£20000 to £100000

Hyperthetical question - if you had £20000 of free cash (and all debts paid off, I wish!) how would you turn this initial outlay into £100000. Using legal means only. Can think of several ways to do it illegally but would not like to spend the next 10 years in jail!

Is it possible to do it within a year or shorter timescale, if not what would be a reasonable timeline?

We were debating this over coffee at work and could not think of a way to do it!

Any ideas? Must be risk free on the intial outlay was the only stipulation.

24 years at a CAGR of 7.2%, if you are lucky. 52 years if you are a non-tax payer and you can get 3.2% for the next 52 years.

Risk free way to get a 500% return in a year...?

Yeah, funnily enough that's not possible!

There are various ways you could try and get a 500% return in a year, but they'd all be exceptionally high risk.

If you want totally risk-free, you might be able to get a couple percent interest but that's it!

I can think of at least one legal way.

It involves buying a particular product that is in short supply and reselling at a higher price. It is completely legal but ethically a lot of people don't like it. There is a small element of risk as the product in question has a limited shelf-life and obtaining it is fairly time intensive but with the kind of stake money you are talking about it is definitely possible. (average purchase price £100-£150 per unit-selling price varies between £300 and £1000)

Otherwise ..............have you seen the matched betting thread ? :)

  • You'd never turn £20k into £100k in a year via matched betting.

500% return in a year, risk free? If anyone tells you that they can do it they are lying.

Indeed. And what's more - they're probably about to con you out of your £20k!
  • I hadn't thought about that! Yes, that is a sure fire way to end up £20k down! by believing someone can get you those returns.

This from duchy sounds interesting....tell me more. What is the product?

As for the 'matched betting' forget it - you have not seen our track record with the Lottery, although the odds are fairly high there too!

Seems you have all come to the conclusion that we did, its impossible without some element of risk over a much longer period. Most of us said set up a business but then there was more debate about what type of business, outlay, risk and profit margins.

Am sure the office debate will go on for some time yet so keep suggesting ways as I think we have nearly exhausted ours.
