I have a bag that is exactly the Ryanair dimensions and will only just fit in the cage. They do check, everytime, any airport I have flown from in the last couple of years.

And make sure any other bags fit in too, even duty free. They are also now really sticking to the "one bag" rule where again a couple of years ago you would have got away with it.

I just got back from Italy flying ryan air. I took quite a large holdall, probably 30/30/60 or something like that, and didn't have any issues. It wasn't crammed, so had they wanted me to, I could easily have squeezed it into their "test tool" - and I have to say, my bag was not the largest, not by a long shot.

Ryanair make a LOT of money from people who say "it's only slightly over".

The good news is that it means lower fares for people who do keep to the rules

But if they had used their cardboard box measure which is JUST the correct size you would have had to cough up, seen it so many times.

Not convinced. It would have fit in the measure easily. I saw someone else with a similar arrangement, the woman picked it up, dropped it into the measure, then moved along...

Me seen it happen too. Their gauge is definitely not oversize, and they are not impressed by you squeezing your bag into it.

The only way you can get away with it is if they don't notice your bag (more likely at some airports that others, depends on how diligent the local handler's staff are) but you are on a wing and a prayer.

Yeah, they bought it along the line at the gate and used it as they were checking people's boarding passes. Like I said, they picked up a guy's bag (similar in size, and fullness to mine), dropped it in, made sure it fit, then carried on.

I saw them hit a couple of hard cases that were too large and took them off to pay....but they seemed to treat soft luggage with a common sense approach. Maybe I was just lucky.

They hold the cardboard box with the handles at the top and lower it over the bag not drop it in, (the box has no bottom) If it won't go over the bag it's too big. No question of being able to squeeze in a larger bag.
