Most pound shops seem to have a 'tyre shine' (purple aerosol) and it works fine.

    Wouldn't use oil!

New tyres aren't shiney, they are matt.

Shiny tyres make me think what are they trying to hide by making the old tyres & car look shiny.

Engine oil would dissolve rubber. Any petroleum products, including vaseline, would also do the same. This is why most products for this purpose will contain silicone as that's rubber friendly.

I can't see any evidence for it, but I would guess treating the tyres in this manner would help stop the sidewalls cracking in the future. Black shiny tyres look better than grey dusty ones, why does wanting something to look better mean someone is trying to hide something? That's almost just like saying don't ever bother washing your car it'll just get mucky again.

You know me well, Its raining now, Thats washing it nicely.
Was covered in volcanic dust last week all gone now.

As long as my tyres have decent tread and the correct pressure i am happy, looking shiny doesnt help in any way.
I would rather the magpies look at my car & move onto the shiny one next to it.

My car is due for its annual wash - simply to remove remains of salt and grit clinging to it from the winter.
