can't get a bank account!

  • To SharynH - I would have said to complain direct to the bank concerned first, but probably it's a bit late to complain a year later, so now she's 18, why not apply for her credit report through equifax or experion? It costs £2 and you have to post the form off I think....that should then reveal what information may be held about her that's preventing her getting an account and you can take it from there. I hope this helps..

Data is being pulled from a credit reference agency. Your son would have to put the request in for his credit file, It's going to show on there, if there is data the CRAs should not be saying he cannot have his report. If it's a blank report, as it should be for a 17 year old then they should confirm that.

    CIFAS should also be contacted.

The ICO will want to see all the communications with the bank about this too. I'd ask them to confirm their final decision. I'd also tell the CRA that if they do not supply a credit report within 7 working days, as is your right under Section 7 of the Data Protection Act, then he's going to the ICO to make a complaint.

All the requests will need to be done by your son.

he was at a real low and really haphazard in his thinking patterns and foolishly allowed someone else to use his account and got some cash in return as well

Was this on an account that he opened with Barclays? Has the account now been closed?
Has the other person opened another account in his name but at another address?
  • Just want to say that there shouldn't be a problem what name the account is in for wages. My OH has had wages paid into my account with no problem.

This is just another example of the banks turning their backs on us. I hope your son gets sorted so he can benefit from financial inclusion

The banks think your son's account was used in a fraud or attempted fraud, apparently with his permission.

You know that this is correct, and moreover, you know that he accepted a cut of the ill-gotten gains.

So it's not like you're correcting a mistake here. What do you expect the banks to do?

Stay away from the police or your son could find himself in court. Sorry, but you need to accept that your son isn't innocent in anybody's eyes except yours and the banking system is closed to him.

he was duped into allowing someon else to use his bank account ( which means he was involved in money laundering). Worried about repercussions as well.... foolishly allowed someone else to use his account and got some cash in return as well

As vulnerable and young as he is, this will do him in. No bank wishes to open an account for a money launderer or fraudster, even if they were duped into it. Not least because they only have his and his mum's word that he was duped at all.

  • How about a Cashplus prepaid MasterCard. He will get a sort code and account number to receive payments and wages can be paid to the account. See https://www.cashplus.co.uk.

A very last resort due to the charges they make. Better to get the bank / fraud sorted out if you can.

yes try get the bank and fraud sorted first. Like Cashplus, my ClearCash card giives me my own sort code and account number, but yes there are charges but if you have no other option (like me) it can be very useful to use a prepaid card
