Can I put a pay as you go sim in an old contract phone?

There is probably an answer on here but i couldn't find it!
My sister was given a Blackberry by a friend who had it on contract with Orange I think, if we put an Orange pay as you go sim card in - will the phone work? Or do we still have to get it unlocked/unblocked? (sorry I don't know much about phones apart from the one I use!!)

Yes, I believe it will work just fine.
I've acquired ex-work BBs and have them working on Orange.
There are also ways of unlocking Blackberrys - look up the Blackberry Swiss Army Knife (BBSAK).0 -
I think you will need some bolton to get full BB functionality (like BBM) on PAYG. Without a bolton you are likely to need some other browser (Opera?) even just to access the Internet.0
