You got an MOT, at a rate lower than VOSA guidelines, and weren't presented with a list of bogus failures.

Regardless of the garage's maths, you were hardly diddled.

Car passed MOT and charged a total of £52.10

as follows Labour £14.25 (MOT charge as per VAT office instructions) Deliver car for MOT = FOC

    Vat £2.85

    MOT £35

    Total £52.10
The highlighted bit implies the garage or their accountant has spoken to or been told by their local VAT office how to account for the labour (MOTs take time) in their accounts. As they have provided a service (MOTed your car) this would attract VAT.

  • They aren't an MOT station and are charged £35 by the garage that does do them. They offered you an MOT at a% discount from std rate but have to list MOT at the rate charged to them so it doesn't attract VAT but the additional charge (the labour bit) is VATable. All above board, you paid what you were quoted, their paperwork is VAT office OK'd!

    Hope that makes sense!
