    labour charge for a mot? ive never been charged that.. anything from £30-£40 for a mot thats it.. no vat added on no labour added on.

    It is an all inclusive fee. They can make that fee anything up to the maximum of £54.85 and there is no VAT on MoT's. They can charge less if they like to attract customers, but still no VaT. What they cannot do is charge a fee for MoT then charge an extra fee for labour and Vat to top it up to or above the maximum fee. They can charge for labour & vat on the labour if they do work to pass the MoT with your permission and knowledge, ie headlamp adjust perhaps.

    so id be asking for my other £17.10 back if there was no work needed to pass mot that they did

    What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?
  • There was no work done whatsoever on the car to enable it to pass MOT

    Is there a government body or some such oversee'er of garages that operate a licence to MOT vehicles that I can contact ??

    Either they picked the car up from you, or they don't do MOTs themselves and charged a labour rate for taking it to the tester.
    1 x 0.25Hr labour = £14.25 (£57/Hr x 0.25)
    VAT @20% =£2.85 (£14.25 x 20%)
    1 x MOT (No VAT) = £35
    Total =£52.10

    OR, really rubbish come on advertising promising a discount that isn't there at all!

    Did you take your car for a "pre MOT check" to a garage that did not carry out MOT's and they then had to take it to an MOT garage for the test?

    Incidentally, 15% discount off the test fee of £54.85 leaves £46.63 and that figure does not show on your invoice.

  • Thanks for the link - I prefer to contact VOSA first so i'm sure of my ground
  • Your post makes no sense?

    Did you take it to a garage that does MOT's or did the place you took it take it to an MOT station?
    Google gives you answers use it.........

    Not sure if it is a VOSA issue. They didn't charge you more than they are allowed to for an MOT and VOSA set a max price. They'd be interested if you thought they had carried out unnecessary work but I can't see them stepping in here.

    I'd speak to the garage about their maths in the first instance.
