Cold callers!

Dear annoying caller,

It may surprise you to know that nobody wants to receive your unsolicited calls, EVER.

You are making money by annoying people and interrupting their lives, and seemingly target people at weekends when many people are trying to relax.

Your staff won't take no for an answer, and rudely hang up without apology when asked politely to stop calling and remove our details from your database. This request is ignored which shows utter contempt towards the members of the public.

Regardless of the clearly inadequate laws that still allow you to harass people with unsolicited calls under the guise of market research, you should respect the wishes of people registered with TPS to not be bothered with any unsolicited calls of any nature. They register for a reason, you know that, and hide behind that gap in the law.

If someone calls your number back after a missed call, you should give the option to remove their number from your database immediately by pressing a number on the tonepad, and never bother them again.

If someone requests one of your staff remove their number, they should politely say they will do it straight away, and apologise for bothering us. Whatever the pressures you place on your staff are, hanging up is rude, unprofessional, and gives a bad image of your organisation to the public. In most organisations, such behaviour would result in a verbal or written warning, or the sack, in this industry it seems to be the norm. Do you think your clients would condone this behaviour?

If you call someone, you should immediately announce who you are calling on behalf, ie who is sponsoring this call, who provided the contact details, and what is the nature of the survey. Most "survey" calls are in fact sales calls pretending to be surveys to avoid TPS complaints.

Many thanks

CK

Now I am always very rude to cold callers after the first no thanks. I used to be polite, but it's a waste of time.
Sadly neither the cold callers or the idiots that respond to them will not read MSE

If I get a cold call (ie as soon as someone says "may I speak to the owner of the house" or "may I speak to Mrs christian name middle name balletshoes") I put the phone down. My daughter is very good at doing that too now :).

For some reason I mostly get people trying to "sell" me a free wall checks, or kid's club karate. Random I know!

I've been getting one call the last few days from 01515591844. Just hangs up as I answer it, which annoys me more than someone trying to sell me something. At least I can say "no thank you" (and I am always polite because it's not the poor sod in the call centre's fault).
This particular number though, I have no idea who it is or even if it's a proper important call. I did the usual google search to find out who it is but for once it's not showing up. either an old cold caller trying it on on a new number or actually someone legit.

The best ones are the ones who phone wanting to speak to Mr Clone. He died nearly 2 years ago and I do so love that rather uncomfortable moment when I point out he's dead. :p

I got a cold call the other day and when I picked up the phone there was the noise of an office background and a long laugh from the caller who then said he was from a legal firm and did I want to make a will?

Did not point out that contemplating your own mortality was not really a laughing matter and that the hilarity did not show his company in a serious light. Just replied truthfully that we had done this elsewhere a month ago.

  • I am now finding that the politest and easiest way to send cold callers(at the door) on their way is to tell them the property is rented and i am the tenant.

Its a quick "oh sorry" from the caller and they quickly make their way next door!

I don't know about you guys but I haven't used my landline in years (no-one apart from me even knows the number) so I just unplugged it, that stopped the darn cold callers.

Everyone who needs to call me would call my mobile, and if I need to call a number that is better using a landline (eg 0800) then I just plug it back in for the call then unplug it later.

Finally, someone else that speaks sense! :rotfl: There is no need for a landline nowadays, like you I am rarely in the house anyway (certainly not throughout the days of the week) so people would have to ring the mobile to get hold of me.

Come on people, stop the endless complaints about cold callers and just unplug the phone or don't answer it!!

Even worse are calls with number witheld
  • I used to work in a call center that cold called people. They usually pay above minimum wage. which is why I guess people stay and put up with abuse.
I was given 4 sheets of paper and a telephone, given the basic understanding of what I was selling, and after half a day's training, was shoved into a room with 100's of other people doing the same thing.

    I quit after 4 days!
