Mark on brickwork - burglar's mark ?

I hope that someone might know the answer to this one because it's stumped everyone I know - including the local community support officer.

Basically, two of my Mum's neighbours have been burgled in the last week. Her bungalow is locked up like Fort Knox (god only knows how she would get out in a fire) so I'm not worried about someone breaking in. However, what is puzzling us is that there's (a) some small new marks on the driveway (like something's been dragged up it) and (b) a new mark on the brickwork on the front of her house - just at the right height to make it easily visible from the road. It's a horizontal line and it's been gouged into one of the bricks. She's concerned in case it's some kind of "signal" to potential burglars.

Another neighbour said that she's heard that the travelling community use these signs (e.g. if the occupants of a particular house might be helpful). I've no idea.

It's worrying my Mum (who doesn't need this - she's got enough to worry about, looking after my disabled dad).

Anyone have any idea what it could be ?

This was about years ago they showed you the different marks burglars used to put outside a home to say if it was worth having a go at it. It used to be chalk though and that doesnt mean to say that's what it iis

  • Two marks....

    Its the bin!

Yep the wheels of a bin!
and the bar at the lid...

Not secret burglar signs... They are a work of fiction.
It could be a sign for the 3 bears and relate to porridge...

And as for your fear mongering. They have no connection to
    "the travelling community"
though most would find that comment pretty offensive.

No - not TWO marks (as in wheels) - but a scattering of tiny scratches (some only a few inches apart) and, anyway, the bin is stored at the front so there's no way it's that.

And I didn't say anything NEGATIVE about the travellers; I said HELPFUL. As in - they sometimes come round the area and ask for spare metal to take away; she's already given them a couple of things, including dad's old bike.

And I'm NOT fear mongering - when the police came round to check on neighbours (after the 2 burglaries) they said that it could well be connected, though they didn't know what it meant.

Please don't leave offensive comments. All I'm trying to do is help someone.

The only people that will know what it means, are the people who did it! There is "no standard" as it were so nobody can give you a definitive answer.

We had one of or planters move at the front of the house a good few inces.. What does it mean? It means somebody has moved the planter... nothing more that could be read into it other than that, and the same goes for the mark. Somebody/something has marked the house. I would not loose any sleep over it and just make sure that the house is always properly locked and any easy to move valuables hidden from view from the window.

It was tramps, not travellers - and the signs just indicated if another tramp might be offered a sandwich there, or be chased off.

That was something done in Chalk, somewhere in Surrey i believe.

The DaPinchi Code rings a bell in the back of my mind.

Why? It is well known that travellers cause trouble, thefts increase, rubbish gets dumped, common land and cricket pitches get churned up etc.

burglars put empty cans/rubbish in the hedge, twigs pointing to the house etc as signs its empty. Always have a look around and pick up any rubbish in your garden because it might have been put there on purpose.
