can anyone recommend a bike lock

hi all, i am going to borrow my dads bike for a couple of weeks to get to work, and notice he only has a cheap lock with it. the bike is worth about £200 (new it was £400). i was thinking of buying a decent lock for it and giving it to him after i've borrowed it.

i've had a quick look and a d-lock with a cable included looks popular, but i am sure some people here could advise me. it is pretty safe at my work but you never know. cheers, john

You probably wouldn't want a cheaper combination lock anyway, but just in case, there is an item on Youtube that shows how to open one in seconds, without tools.

I have a Kryptonite Evolution u lock and a Top Features of the Kryptonite KryptoFlex 4 Foot Cable as well. These are probably the best locks you can get but they will cost you about £55! Check out wiggle.co.uk for these. Got 10% off at the moment

  • You want a Thatcham Rated lock and chain, I had one that was £139 for the chain and £70 for the lock, and was rated 2500 Brinell hardness (basically you need a welding torch to cut it off).

Depends a lot on where you leave it and how attractive it is to thieves. Given the choice of a secure underground car park or the street in Canary Wharf, London, I often leave it in the street because it's faster to get into work that way, and I've never had any issues in over 5 years.

My general strategy was to insure the bike (although now the bike's getting a bit old I don't bother with the insurance any more), then buy the cheapest lock that met the insurer's criteria - which was Sold Secure Silver rated, and the cheapest lock I found that carries that rating is this one for £24 - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Onguard-Pitbull-Shackle-115mm-Including/dp/B0010VPLPC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1344849884&sr=8-1
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning
  • so by the sounds of it a d-lock plus a cable is the best way to go? that onguard one looks pretty good i might go for that one.

Shame its more than the value of the bike.
