iPad is a toy. Children like toys.

Come October the Microsoft Surface will be upon us. As portable and pretty as an iPad, yet capable of doing real work.

Please define 'real work' in this context....

Just wait until October when Apple bring out the iPad Mini (probably), a 7" version of the iPad to try and fight off the likes of the Nexus 7

If Apple becomes a follower rather than a leader it will fail, ask not for whom the bell tolls.

Serious writing. Serious spreadsheets. Programming. Databases. Anything that needs a keyboard. Interoperability.

    Need I go on?

Probably OK for the OP's daughter if he/she wants to spend that much on a toy, but you can surf the web and play games for a lot cheaper.

  • Certain schools are/were giving iPads out free last year to 11/12 year olds

That's crazy. Part of me thinks I would have liked my daughter to go to that school and kept the ipad for my self :P

    Sorry sinister thoughts!

As a family living on income support, it's crazy to even consider it especially for a 11/12 year old child.
