I do not expect to have to spend nothing on it but I don't want to buy another car where the clutch gearbox, and whole exhaust system goes within 6 weeks!:eek::eek:

You've been to kwik fit, haven't you?

only went to kwik fit for the exhaust but yes lol
I was actually quite impressed as had a previous bad experience with them
the guy was really nice and never wanted me to get it fixed he asked me how much the car cost me(700 quid) and that it would cost that to fix
didnt even ask me to get it fixed there!
  • If you are worried about the clutch and gearbox etc, try narrowing your search down to maybe adverts that state new clutch/gearbox etc that way you know they have been done providing the receipts are there to back it up.

£900 is not alot of money but we all have budgets. At this price range, you would expect to have to carry out repairs but the older the car and the greater the mileage etc, the chances are higher that clutches etc could be nearing the end of there life and could go at any time.

I know I have a small budjet but want to make sure I dont waste it
Has anyone got any positive stories of a sub £1000 car from a dealer lasting them a decent amount of time(1-2 years)?

I bought one car from a dealer for just over 1K that lasted me for ten years. I just replaced it with another one from another dealer for just 1K which I am very happy with.

Shopping for older cars is very much "pot luck" but you can minimise your risks. I prefer to buy from local garages who deal mainly with repairs but also sell one or two cars on the side.

If any thing goes badly wrong I can get my vehicle to the garage quite easily as it is only a couple of miles away.

What really gives me confidence is talking to the garage/mechanic/dealer who is selling the car. You can easily tell those who have a good attitude. More than one local garage has told me that they would always try to help a customer out even if the car was out of warranty.

I am thinking if I buy from a dealer I will have more protection?
In theory you should have more protection buying from a dealer but in practice it depends on the dealer.

I have read the forum and have seen that buying a warranty is probably a waste as they gernally say things go due to ear and tear?
They also have a way of not covering the things that actually break.

Plus with a car if it breaks within the first 6 months I presume I will be covered by SOGA?
Not necessarily. Allowances can be made for age, value and state of the vehicle in determining if the dealer has to put it right or not.

If you buy a car you need to budget to get the timing belt and water pump changed unless you have proof that it has been done recently.

My latest car, Octavia 1.9 TD on an 'X' plate. Cost £675 to buy + £375 for timingbelt/waterpump replacement. Returns 60 mpg (ave.). Cost per mile - 24p. Will do me for a year or 2.
