Advice on cheapie car
Back in march I bought a second hand car off someone for 700 quid who said it was fine but it broke soon after anyway I wanted to save up and get a decent car but my new job I have some early starts were there is no bus so I need a car
I cannot get finance as I have missed payments recenty(just finished being a student) and I dont really want finance as I hav debts I want to pay off
If I save I could manage about £3000 savings in a year
In the meantime this month I can skint myself and have approx £900 for a car
I am thinking if I buy from a dealer I will have more protection?
I have read the forum and have seen that buying a warranty is probably a waste as they gernally say things go due to ear and tear?
Plus with a car if it breaks within the first 6 months I presume I will be covered by SOGA?
I have seen a v reg yaris for 900 with 84000 miles
I only need it to last a year but it does need to last a year.
Is it possible?!?
I dont know anyone with any car knowledge and really dont want to throw money away again(the last car for 700 I spent 600 on a gear box and clutch but then the cat convertor and exhaust went so I got rid :-(

Warranty is a total waste of money on an old, cheap car.
If you look around, and are completely unfussy about make and model, there are bargains to be had.
Recently when I was looking around, I saw a slightly tatty Seat Cordoba on an 06 plate for for £850, diesel as well. Also a 55-plate Chevrolet Lacetti sell for £900, an 05-plate Nissan Almera for £1200, and an 04 plate 1.3 Mitsubishi Lancer for £700.
If in as good condition as they seemed, I could see any of these being good for at least three years.0 -
Yaris is considered to be fairly reliable and probably a good shout.
Micra and Fiesta are also worth a look.0 -
thanks
I know I have a small budjet but want to make sure I dont waste it
Has anyone got any positive stories of a sub £1000 car from a dealer lasting them a decent amount of time(1-2 years)?0 -

Every one has, but if you buy from a dealer and are expecting some sort of guarantee then £500 of your £900 will be taken up by margin. Talk to friends and family and try and pick something up that way.
My neighbours old 53 plate Astra went for £300 yesterday as he just wanted shot of it.0 -
Most reliable car you can pick up for £500 these days with decent economy has got to be a Rover from 1996-1999 with the 2L diesel engine.
Nothing to go wrong really, have got lots if friends with them and they've been solid. Had 3 myself.
The 200 is decent but small and has corrosion issues at this age, while the 400 seems better put together and is basically a Civic underneath so parts are everywhere. The 600 is an Accord underneath but they tend to suffer rear arch rust and front suspension ball joints are weak.
Just worked out I've done over 100k of my own mileage across my Rover diesels with just routine maintenance... sorted.

When we got the new car a couple of years back we got shot of a Y reg Yaris with 110k on the clock and we've seen it about so its still going

Look for something older but had the same owner for many years. And in perfect condition. It will be cheaper to fix than a newer car that uses all your money.
I think your expectations of a cheap banger from a dealer is rather blinkered.
A 15 year old car should be bought knowing it will need care and attention to keep going, If you dont need to spend money on it then your lucky.
Old cars are pot luck, I buy a £2000 ish car and so far i have been lucky. But i have another £2000 sitting there ready to pay for repairs or buy another if it all goes wrong.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
I do not expect to have to spend nothing on it but I don't want to buy another car where the clutch gearbox, and whole exhaust system goes within 6 weeks!:eek::eek:
I know I will pay for repairs. If I had to spend another £1000 over the gear maintaining the car I don't mind.
I wish I knew someone who was selling a car but no one I really know is0
