My son will be 18 on Saturday. He is currently at school, and will be going to University in September. He does not have a part-time job. He earns some money by selling on ebay.
He is an additional card-holder on oh's Barclaycard, but I would like him to have his own credit card.
Do any card providers offer a credit card to 18 year old students?

Not meaning to sound funny, but why do you want him to have a CC? Wouldn't it be better that he learnt to budget with the money he has, etc...?0

18 years old and credit cards dont usually go well together.
however, if he a responsible type of person and you ensure he sets up a DD to pay in full each month, then I would suggest he speaks to his bank in the first instance and try to get a card with a 250 or less limit.
if not, then Barclays do a 'starter' CC for first time people
or if he's going to UNI then most banks that do student a/cs often offer CC to students too.0 -

He is perfectly capable of looking after his own finances, as he has already proved.
He would prefer to have the money sitting in his savings account, earning interest, and then paying off his credit card bill every month.0 -
i'd wait til he goes to uni cos some of the offers on the student accounts are pretty good0

He'll get a 0% overdraft of anything <£2k anyway.
So why not just fill that up then draw (say) £500 out of the savings and carry on. That way he doesn't need to clear it monthly and can clock up a bit more interest.0 -
Bank of Scotland offer a student credit card, but no special offers with 0% - can't find the information on their website, but I know they have application forms in the branches.0

Once he starts Uni, there will be lots of offers of student bank accounts and credit cards that he will become eligible for, with various offers and freebies. Most of the big banks do them, usually not publicised til the time students start at Uni (Sept/Oct). Might be good to wait till then? He will not be eligible for these accounts till he actually starts at Uni, I don't think.0

might have changed now but i have to prove i was at uni by taking in my grant letter (back in the good old days) also i had to pay my grant in there as well as my student loan in order to be eligible for the student offers0 -

It is also a breach of your oh's barclaycard terms and conditions to allow a minor to be an additional card holder on a credit card.0 -

When I tried to get my son a credit card in the summer, I contacted the companies with whom OH has a card, asking if my son could be an additional cardholder. Nationwide and Tesco said no. When I telephoned Barclaycard asking if my 17 year old son could have a card on his father's card, I was told he could. That is why, he has a Barclaycard.0
