    I have to disagree with your post and would say that "they may make it worse". Fully agree with you otherwise.

    As an example, my son was stopped at 99 on a dual. He was polite and the traffic cops gave him a well-deserved lecture while being very friendly with him, and helped relax him as he was terrified. He still, rightly, went to court (5 bonus points, £300).

    Fast forward to a friend who had a go a other traffic cops when caught doing 47 on a 30 (dual-carraigeway). She told them they were being unfair and should just give her a warning! They were also polite, but left out the humour and she didn't go to court, even although they could have taken it there*. Hence my disagreeing with you.

    To the OP, I would advise paying up unless you are absolutely sure you can beaat the system. As my son said, it's a painful lesson, but less so than an accident.

    * This is a friend who not long before had gone through a give way at a crossroads at 30 plus because she was talking to a family member and paying no attention to the road. I was in the back seat praying like I'd never prayed before!!
