It can work, I had 2 lesson with an instructor but then decided my dad would teach me in my own old banger. I would get the bus to work and my dad would pick me up.

Got my provisional in the beginning of August and passed 1st time early October, I had not driven previous to getting provisional at age 17.

How long ago was that? The driving test that my children took seemed a lot more rigorous than back in my day.

Provisional insurance may cost you as much as a decent course of lessons.

I didnt comment on the fact you think your competent, I know someone who thinks he is a good driver yet cant change gear smoothly and knows zero about observation and road positioning.

I wouldnt teach him if he paid me £50 a lesson.
You must be a good driver! Most people pick up bad habits that, if passed on to learners, can cause them to fail their tests.

Of course im the best driver on the road, Its just everyone else :)

I know a driving instructor and he lets me drive :) He did mention that
i should think about doing an instructor course.

I would probably get into trouble for telling pupils they are crap drivers though.

I have my moments though, We all make mistakes sometimes.

" I have taken 5 lessons in the past and am already competent on the road."

I don't think so after just FIVE lessons.....and if you can't afford £23 for a driving lesson, running a car will bankrupt you!

Who says they even plan to run a car?
Perhaps the next level of promotion in their job requires a driving licence?

Your first point is valid though.

Insurance is a big factor, if you want to learn with the help of family and friends then you need to be added to their insurance, this can be more expensive than the lessons.
I was added to my dads car 23 years ago as a learner for £25 and drove him everywhere, no lessons required and passed first time. This time round insurance prohibits this.

It's do-able. Mum taught me to drive. Had 1 official lesson. The guy said to come back when I'd done my theory. Passed it. Had 2 more lessons. Then passed my test first time round :D

Don't forget that someone else not only has to agree to teach you to drive, free of charge, but also to put at risk their vehicle while you are learning.
Your attitude of 'already competent' is not helpful at all.

It's hugely beneficial to have practice as well as lessons so the insurance would probably have to be paid anyway.

It's quite worrying to think that simmed feels "already competent on the road" after five lessons.
