Do I give my adoptive parents details or my birth fathers .I dont know much as my birth dad died when I was very young but he was sick, legally my adoptive dad is my legal parent. Dont want to complicate things but need to get this right. Can anyone advise

Your family's health needs to be your blood relatives.

Insurers will understand if you explain you were adopted.

I'm pretty sure you have no legal right to know your birth parents medical history and the insurers have no way of confirming what you say so I'd be careful of giving any details which might be incomplete, gossip & rumour or just plain wrong.

I'd just explain that you are adopted etc to the insurer, it must be something they encounter on a reasonably regular basis and I'd be surprised if they didn't have procedures for dealing with it

You just state you are adopted on the form and unable to answer about blood parents

  • Hi thanks for responses_ Today went in with the limited knowledge I have to talk to repand will pay the price- average£28 per month for only 66K cover. My mum tod me that she had been advised by medic no genetic link/risk to me from cancer however advised today that premium is be 10 times what it should be if I didnt know my dads medical history.|Iam 18 years old and feel that if detailed medical queries were undertaken I woulnt be penalised. Ten times increase because my birth dad died young from cancer without any genetic causes or seems unfair. Concerned about when later on in my life if I need a lot of cover for mortgage and dependants. Is there any company who will look more detail at medical history.

Who are you doing a quote with? I did a quick "don't know much about you" quote for you on Barclays and got this:
This is the life insurance cover we could offer you for a monthly payment of £20.00
(Please note, this is a quick quote - your monthly and total premium may change based on the answers you provide during your full application).
    Your cover: £239,162
    Plan details
Your plan details are as follows:
    The person covered:
    Male
    Never smoked
    Born 01/01/1994
    Amount of cover:
    £239,162
    How long cover will last:
    51 years
    Monthly payment:
    £20.00
If you keep your plan for the full term of 51 years, then the total premium you will have paid will be £12,240.00
    Type of cover:
    Level
    Start date requested:
    12/08/2012
We'll pay out the life insurance amount during the term of the plan if:
you die, or you're diagnosed with a terminal illness before the last 18 months of the plan term, and you have 12 months or less to live
WARNING - This policy has no cash-in value at any time

Based on no family history whatsoever, just putting in an 18 year old man until his 70th birthday. Is that not the kind of thing you want if it's to pay off a mortgage and have some left for any future family you may have?

  • Hi, thats the sort of cover and price I was expecting however I do know basics about my birth father and have moral dilemma to disclose although I know I have no more increased risk than Joe Average

If you know that your birth father was diagnosed with cancer then you have to disclose it. There's no moral dilemma. If you don't disclose it you risk the policy being voided.

It does sound odd though that your quote is 10 times more than it would have been if you'd not disclosed it. What type of cancer did your birth father have?

I am adopted and never have I had a premium attached to any insurance policy as I always state that I have no knowledge of birth family medical history.

I think you need to research further exactly what form of cancer your birth father died from if you feel obligated to disclose this information.

I personally wouldn't disclose unless I had tangible evidence of cause of death.
