I would say that work passwords, usernames and data is company property which the OP took home. Property doesn't only mean physical things like the hard-drive, it includes the stuff on it if that belongs to the employer.

    Fair point. :)

But my point is that the poster stated that the OP had behaved wrongly (ie, without permission or instruction) when they have no idea whether that's the case or not. I didn't think that was fair. :)
' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".

I don't think has any right to a copy of your hard drive or software you have paid for yourself but as others have said client information such as passwords is important.

Perhaps on Monday you could convene a meeting with the office manager and the boss to discuss contingency when you are off in future as it has clearly had a big impact on the office manager. If nobody else is skilled enough to do what you do then I can understand your reluctance in handing over information which would enable the office manager to 'dabble' and possibly make matters worse leaving you with issues to clear up upon your return. Perhaps this could be explained.

Good luck but it sounds a bit no win if you can't get the boss on side.
  • Just email her the passwords. Got to be quicker than writing out all that text on here. Which you weren't too ill to do ;)
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

If I were OP as soon as I'd felt well enough to go near some technology I'd have emailed over the passwords - in an encrypted file of course, for data protection reasons. Hoping that she wouldn't understand the concept of an encrypted file, wringing my hands and cackling loudly.

    But that's just me...
Data protection is there for you, not for companies to hide behind
  • ;) Thanks for your comments & suggestions. May I make it clear that the 'Office manager' has no responsibilities towards web design or looking after clients. She is supposed to invoice print work, which she is 3 months behind on doing due to her ebay fetish. She isn't my 'boss'.
I don't think i'm being paranoid at all. I started out being freelance for this company, they asked me if I could do work on a fulltime basis. Two weeks ago, the boss said we were all getting our books, and they would be starting a new company. Myself and another employee were getting to be directors with a 1% share, we are all going on minimum wage, and our previous wages will be topped up by dividends. An obvious ploy/scam that only makes them benefit.

Well no-one is forcing you to take the offer.

Frankly I think you're better off out of there.

If you're well enough to make long posts and to send texts then you were well enough to encrypt a file with a few passwords in it and email.

But then no-one is making you stay working in a jobwith someone you obviously despise and who appears to feel the same way about you.

You are not there therefore you don't know what responsibilities she has been given in your absence
You never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow

None of this matters. Currently, you are off sick and one of the managers at work has requested the passwords. Either send them as requested, or contact your manager to verify that they are required and send them to him/her.

I think one of the two of us doesn't understand the office dynamics here ;)

You are on minimum wage. You took company passwords home without leaving copies in the office, which is so clearly wrong I am surprised you need someone to point that out to you. You are having a personality clash with the office manager, who whilst she may not be your direct line manager is still senior in the hierarchy to you. And she is sleeping with the person who owns the company. I personally can't see what cards you hold in this one, or how you expect to win this battle. And to be blunt but for your own good, whilst you may think that no one in the company has your skills and that you are indispensable, if that were really the case you would be being paid more than minimum wage, which is probably less than the office cleaner is on. You are completely and immediately replaceable.

I think there are two choices: suck it up and learn to get on with the office manager, or look for another job and resign when you have found it. The OM may not be the girlfriend forever, and if she becomes the wife rather than the girlfriend, you could find that your days are numbered anyway, as she seems to have as low an opinion of you as you do of her.
