Moroccan Dirham

Good Afternoon, hopefully someone will be able to help out.

I am planning a trip to Morocco in October and am getting a bit confused on the money side of things. I have read in several places that the Dirham is a closed currency and that it is not possible to exchange cash before getting to Morocco. However, when I have searched on the travelmoneymax tool, there are some places which seem to allow exchange in this country. Am I right in thinking that I can import Dirham to Morocco, but am not allowed to export (so would need to change any remainder back to £ before leaving the country)? If so, is there any limit to the amount I can take over there with me (I'm not planning on doing a huge amount of shopping, but will be there for a little over 2 weeks)?

I usually just use my Santander zero credit card for overseas spending, but know that this is less likely to be widely accepted in Morocco than Europe/ North America, etc. so am trying to work out the best way to take/ have access to money over there. I don't have a Nationwide, etc. current account.

Thanks. :)

Just use the Zero card to withdraw cash if you have nothing else. Clear the balance as soon as possible to minimise interest.
  • We just took sterling with us and changed it in the airport - was easy to do and no fuss

When left Morocco there was no check on whether I was taking any Dirhams out but it is valueless outside the country. I still have a bit of loose change.

Cash machines are plentiful in the modern parts of towns but never seemed to have paper to issue receipts. However the cash withdrawn always tallied with my bank statements

    I see. :)

A mix of Sterling and the Zero card will do.
  • You wont need a great deal of cash I suspect. It's best to change on a daily basis at the hotel. I think I am right in saying there is an official rate and that it is the same wherever you change. Don't bring any back as you won't get anything for it.

  • Thanks all for your responses. Sounds like I will be OK with my zero card and will take some sterling with me too (might exchange a bit before I go so that I have some to hand before getting there).
