kitchens were fine but the designs they produced were pants.

i am a keen cook who has loads of pots, pans and gadgets - i stressed that i needed lots of storage space and then the problems started as what i wanted wasn't a bog standard stick a run of cupboards on a wall

we have a sloping ceiling and i wanted units on units (which they all show) to utilise this. the woman from magnet couldn't work out how to do this so ignored my requests and actually told me i should get rid of the sloping ceiling and just go for a level one even though this would have given the room a very low ceiling (and we're all tall people).

howdens man forgot to give me an oven then gave me a built under despite me stressing that i must have a built in as i have a bad back and no longer want to lift heavy pots out of a built under oven. he also struggled with the ceiling

neither of them wanted to give me a peninsular with hob on it, and neither of them could work out how to put an extractor over this into the sloping ceiling, magnet told me i didn't need one as i had doors and windows!

both either double booked appointments or didn't bother to turn up. final straw with magen was turning up at 8am for a prebooked appointment only to find that someone had walked in off the street and she had decided to see them.

the cost for the very dull and pedestrian designs was expensive for what they were.

got exactly what i wanted from ikea for less than a quarter of their prices, i have units on units, a hob on the peninsular and a cooker hood installed above it so obviously it can we done despite them telling me it couldn't

so that's why i think the designs they produced for me were pedestrian and dull, you obviously were far luckier than me, but my money spends anywhere and i got a fantastic design done at ikea as they actually listened to what i wanted

To bring things back on topic (Is This Quote Fair?).

We have had 3 independent fitters look. They quote between £2500-£3500 for a full install including tiling and flooring.

Seems much better to me. We're not going with the cheapest as I was much more impressed with the knowledge of one of the more expensive ones.

I asked specifically whether Ikea units were a problem. 1 said yes, 2 said no. They generally agreed they are slightly fiddlier, but not a serious issue. To quote one: "Ikea kitchens are cheap, but good".

To me it seems that if you are installing the kitchen yourself the lack of service void might be a problem, but shouldn't be for proper fitters. And if done well, you end up with lovely deep units.

Depends on the size of the kitchen.
My London Fitters charge a set amount per kitchen inc electrics then per sq mtr on floor and wall tiles, so all does depend on the size of your room to if its fair.

    Don't buy ikea crap
Thank you for that well reasoned, clearly presented and objective contribution to the thread.

    Cheers

    thanks, any time.
  • Glad you found a local fitter who you are happy with. I agree and say they are cheap but good for the money.

The lack of service void is a pain but for any decent fitter isnt a problem

  • I agree in some circumstances the installation costs can appear higher than a local fitter... However with the installation there are certain gurantees; IKEA fitters have fitted an IKEA kitchen before and if anything is wrong it will be replaced. You also get a 5 year workmanship gurantee. In the short term it will appear local fitters are cheaper. However it is important you find the right one. If anything is damaged or fitted incorrectly then it would be down to you to sort out the mess that sometimes local fitters can leave. Generally this is because local fitters assume how they think IKEA kitchens are planned and put together.. In some instances they don't know.. For your average kitchen there will be around +130 boxes and from experience sometimes is a little overwhelming for some fitters...

If a kitchen fitter finds a large number of boxes overwhelming, which is his normal day job, then I'd suggest he needs to look at alternative employment.

Desperate....:D:D:D Well worth bringing a two year old thread back to life for. Installation sales down this year at Ikea are they?

At least admit who you work for when posting stuff like that...I do when I give advice on the products or services of the company I work for!
