Hi I would just like some advice as to which of the above you would recommend to buy for my garden for use on those chilly British summer evenings? and are any of them more enviromentally friendly than others?

Thanks

I know the gas patio heaters are very much frowned upon by deep greens but I don't know about the others. I personally like FIRE!! but that 's just my pyro- tendencies

I will be watching this thread, avidly. I bet you like to sit round the BBQ after the foods all cooked and eaten, stoking it up with some more charcoal. Lovely! Roll on summer!!! :)

Oh yeah, I wander round the garden getting sticks to put in the fire, it's a bad example for the kids.
Did you know that toast made on the embers of a barbie is the best ever?

I understand that the outside of the chimneas get quite hot when on (sorry if this is so obvious) so if you have young children you may want to bear this in mind.

We have a fire pit that throws out alot of heat, not good if you have kids as its smokes if it gets windy but the fuel is very cheap (logs about £3 a big bag)

We couldn't decide what to get, but we bought a chiminea late last summer as it was in the sales. I was quite surprised to find that it said you can only use wood in it. Don't know if they are all like this, but personally I would have prefered the option of using charcoal.

On the plus side it looks very attractive on the patio, doesn't take up alot of room and gives off enough heat. Hubby also sometimes uses an old frying pan in there instead of using the BBQ.

Thanks everyone for the replies. We,ve just moved house and have our first ever little garden! So Im soooo looking forward to some nice summer weather this year(hopeful I know) and having our first ever bbq! Just wanted to know which was most effective in terms of heat output really. But was also a little worried about how much bad smoke smell the chimnea or fire pit would give off, neighbours washing etc!!and my other half keeps mumbling about carbon emissions, but will take all your useful advice on board. Thanks!

We're really pleased with our chiminea - we start it with charcoal, cook on it and add logs after to keep warm. What's a fire pit? Sounds very exciting.

We bought a Chimanea last year (teraccota type) and we burn both wood and charcoal on it. Wood spits a bit, but its great to get a roaring fire going. We sat around it last night burning a neighbors old fence panel - hours of nostalgic fun and entertainment!! It was a very cold night last night, but we were cosy around the fire. We do toast on it, and Ive even done jacket spuds in tin foil on it - sooooooo tasty. I dont like the look of the Gas heaters.
