looking for a cheap tv

I have just seen the other thread about new tvs but my budget and needs are different hence the new thread rather than highjacking the other thread.

My current tv is around 6 years old and the sound is starting to go. I thought it was the freeview box but had the engineer out lots of times and it looks like it is the tv.

I don't watch much tv so don't need an all singing/dancing type thing. I have the xbox kinect linked to it but that is all.

I don't want to spend much as it doesn't get used much.

Any views on this one - http://www.ebuyer.com/343381-digihome-40-full-hd-lcd-tv-40912dtv1080pu

or this one http://www.ebuyer.com/389297-agora-42-inch-full-hd-3d-tv-ag42lcd3dtv

I have bought from ebuyer before with no problems and they seem to be cheaper than everywhere else (probably for a reason though!)

I'd never recommend anyone to get a no-name make TV. Generally they skimp on component quality - particularly in the power supplies - so they can fail very quickly.

I'd generally recommend looking at the cheapest named make you can find at Richer Sounds. For example they've got a Toshiba 40" Full HD with built-in HD Freeview tuner for just under £300.

ali-t - you mention your budget, then you link to 2 ~£300 40 inch TVs, plus a 55" TV for ~£1300 - what IS your budget?!!
Is it worth it? Well it's far bigger, has LED backlighting for the LCD screen, FreeviewHD, Smart TV, WiFi - it's all singing, all dancing, and a far better TV all round than the other 2. You can certainly get 55" TVs for cheaper. You can also get 42" TVs for not much more than £300 that will be better than those other 2. Do you have a budget/size in mind? I wouldn't want to have to listen to the sound on those 2 cheapos.

I only linked to that one to query whether there can really be much difference in quality to warrant a £1K difference.

My budget is minimal. £400 max, preferably closer to £300

My living room is huge and it has an average sized tv (is that 32" or 43"?) which is a bit dwarfed so either medium to large is preferable.

  • We bought one of these as a bedroom tv, not the best speakers or on screen tv guide but for the price it's fab!

Bear in mind that with toshiba, some of their cheapo ones are actually made by vestel and just have the tosh badge on them.

I have no ideas about TVs. Is led or LCD better for just watching TV?
