Hi, we started 5:2 this week.We are both early 50's and new Grandparents so we feel the need to 'stay young' if possible. We have decided on Mondays and Fridays. Today we had 2 scrambled eggs to which my husband added a sice of ham, for breakfast. We skipped lunch, although I felt a bit light headed so ate a raw carrot. This evening we had a chicken breast and a huge variety of veg stir fried.
I think I might try having 100 cals for breakfast on Monday and save 100 for a salad lunchtime to keep from feeling light headed.
We are both doing this for health purposes as well as loosing a bit of extra weight, we hope. Watch this space.....

I'm stunned by some of the results people are getting.
I'm going start this 5:2 diet from monday.
I'm quite excited by it! It would be wonderful to shift some weight, plus I think it going to teach me that I just don't need as much food as I eat.

Decided to try this after watching the Michael Mosley documentary, which I thought was amazing.

I have an an underactive thyroid and have been struggling to lose the 1+ stone that I put on for the last couple of years.

I always find diets hard to stick to on a permanent basis as they are so boring - just not sustainable.

However, after watching the programme I said to OH that I really felt I could do that - so much easier to be able to eat normally for 5 days and cut down for 2 - no problem.

It has proved really easy and I have lost 3lb after 3 diet days:T which is just so encouraging. We do Monday and Thursday.

I simply cannot understand people and nutritionists who say that doing this could be potentially harmful, that just seems completely crazy, it is not even fasting really.

In the western world we have just got too used to stuffing our faces with food we don't need, we just like it.

I am planning to stick with it, but won't let it interfere with my life if I am doing something special on a Monday or Thursday that involves eating, I will just have the one fasting day that week - easy:T
Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time

With all due respect, most nutritionists, or at least those who are post graduate and hold a science degree, have a far better understanding of the human body and how it works in relation to the food we eat than the general lay person. It's far more complex than just putting food in our mouths. The food we eat has a significant impact on our hormones and indeed, as does fasting.

For some people following a regime such as this could be potentially harmful, hence why caution is always advised and to seek medical/professional advice if you have any health problems that might be affected by or contributory to weight issues.

But surely it is these same scientists that have devised the 5:2 diet and have researched the benefits. They are now telling the world of the advantages of taking up such a diet.

I have been doing this diet for a fortnight now. I am finding the fasting incredibly easy to do. My main reason for it is health. I started off at 10st. I am 5'4", female, size 14 and have a BMI of 25. This may not seem high but I have very small bones. My wrist only measures about 4" round. So that amount of weight looks too much on me.

However, although I could do with dropping a dress size or two my main concern is the fat around my waist. I have quite a lot of waist fat and a big stomach. I understand that is the bad fat and makes you more likely to have a heart attack or cancer. So I would like to get rid of that and to be able to wear nice clothes again would be a bonus.

I have lost about 4lb over the fortnight, which is not an abrupt weight loss but if it continues to go down slowly and steadily I will be happy. I am mainly doing this for health reasons and would like more energy.

With respect, I think far more harm is caused to your body by over-eating than by merely cutting back for two days per week.

As Doctor Michael Mosley said: half the world is dying from starvation and the other half killing themselves from eating too much.

Perhaps complete fasting for any length of time could cause problems, but I don't think it would really hurt for a day. I certainly don't believe that cutting back to 500/600 calories would do any harm to anyone. The illnesses caused by obesity must cost the NHS an absolute fortune.

Apart from the losing weight aspect, I liked the other benefits.

Well the 100 year old chap who ran the London marathon was on small portions so he must be doing something right. People don't ask for medical advice before they overeat so I think in comparison eating only 500 calories a day must come quite low on the scale of harmful things you can do to your body.

  • Just started this week and had my 2 days fasting. Managed well but got headaches although I kept up good fluid intake. Any tips?
