Sound. How much do you hear from neighbours

I live in the top floor flat above shops in Crouch End. I can hear everything the people downstairs do, as well as people to the left and rigt. I have to listen to chill music/ambient sounds (thunderstorms etc) 4 nights out of 7 to get to sleep at all because downstairs listen to the TV so loudly until midnight.
I don't want to be crude, so sorry for this, but I can also hear when downstairs have sex. They are South African and I even heard her say 'ja, dat was goed' after a session last month. She's very loud.
They had an argument on Saturday night this week and I heard the whole thing. How she wishes he would go out with her more often, and watch less TV. She even said he doesn't listen to her enough - although how that's possible when I hear everything I don't know!!
That same night the people to my left had a karaoke party.
Needless to say, I'm leaving when lease expires in July.0 -
i live in a vlock off flats bottom cornor. i woke on saturday night to hear upstairs man and woman really having a massive barney. She kissed another bloke in a club or something.
they dont do it often. but i can hear people using the toilet whenim in the bath. which is not nice.
And across the way there is a polish woman how rules her kids with an iron [STRIKE]mouth[/STRIKE] fist. which can get a little on my tit's
i also am just waiting to move out. and am worrying about the new neigbours. as brfore the polish lady moved in there were a couple of right awfull tenants in that flat that had to be evicted. and i really dont want that in the next place we move to.
the way this flat was built (i think 1996) is crap, the walls really are like paper. i would'nt admit to building it if i were a builder. If i upset you don't stress, never forget that god aint finished with me yet.0 -
Our house was built in 1950s, we hear quite a lot from next door. We can set our clock at 10.45 when mr big comes home from the pub. Also they like to shout at footie matches/horse racing on telly/cricket/rugby.
Not complaining though as i know it could be worse and they are really nice family.Just to win anything would be great!!0 -
I used to live in a pretty shoddily build terrace. Most of the noise I wouldn't hear anything, but there was a party flat next door that kept us up some nights and on the otherside there was an asian family with a number of young children. Again, didn't hear a lot most of the time, but every morning it would be "ALI! ALI!!! AAAAAAAAAALI!" over and over again. It seems that Ali could outsleep everyone in our house...
I'm amazed at how little consideration people show their neighbours - even now, (I live in a detached property), the neighbours think nothing of sticking on a CD pretty loud with the windows open. Nothing ruins a summer's nap like crappy euro-dance.0 -
i live in a converted victorian house.and when we moved in we were told the previous occupents spent a bomb sound proofing the place.but i dont think its true. we can hear evrything from the lady upstairs footsteps, doors, washing machine, and even her microwave going ding when its finished cooking.occasionally her partner comes over and it gets pretty dodgy!!!!
luckily she works away lot so we only have it one or two nights aweek.

We live in a mid-80s semi and we very rarely hear next door. If their 6-year-old son throws a massive tantrum, or they're doing some hammering, we can just hear it.
On the other hand, we can clearly hear our neighbours across the street sometimes. They like to argue every now and then and both have the kind of voices that could carry for miles.0 -
I live in a Bellway Home, built in 2000. I have to say the sound insulation is just awful. Either that or there is a herd of elephants upstairs. In addition to hearing this annoying guy moving his furniture around during the day on his laminate flooring (whether it's 7am on a Saturday morning or 3pm on a weekday), we can hear him sneeze, cheer on his football/rugby team, put on his washer/dryer and hammering at midnight on Sundays, etc.
The handyman I used in the past said that building regulations (regarding sound proofing especially when you put in laminate/wooden flooring) have been introduced since 2000 but there's nothing you can do about selfish inconsiderate !!!!!!!s, can you?0 -
We live in a 1960's semi. I have never heard anything for our elderly neighbour, she must hear our 4 children though and my other half screaming at them. She is very polite though and when I ask her she says she never hears a thing. The house we lived in before was a 1930's terrace and you could hear everything the nextdoor neighbour was doing, this included them trying for their 1st child. Every night around 10oclock she would start her moans of esctasy. :rotfl:0

I live in a first floor flat in a Edwardian Mansion block in London. We are sandwiched in between two other flats. Don't hear a peep from downstairs. Upstairs are Rugby fans and they sometimes play touch rugby in the lounge, which is a bit annoying. But crucially, they are pretty quiet during the night.
Next door have a baby, which you sometimes hear crying - that can't be helped. But as a general rule, I am only really bothered if my neighbours are noisy at night when I am trying to get to seep. This is a rarity.
Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the block on the other side of our communal gardens. We are lucky that the flats are designed so that all the lounges are at the front and the bedrooms and kitchens surround the garden. Most normal people have parties in their lounge, but some use their kitchen. This means that during the summer they keep people sleeping in all three blocks awake.
Biggest offenders seem to be the people living above our next door neighbours (the ones with the baby). Feel really sorry for them.0 -
I know my neighbours aren't morning people as they tend to start most days with a blazing row. I think he doesn't like getting up. Fortunately it all kicks off about half an hour after I get up so it doesn't really bother me (truth be told I find it quite amusing).
Very few problems in the winter, but come summer when the windows are open it's noise noise noise. Not just from the neighbours though. Traffic, new developments, people ....
I live in London and it's noisy city you get used to it (go deaf) after while.0
