Sound. How much do you hear from neighbours

The town house next door became occupied a few months ago. The houses were built according to the 1996 regs. How much sound would you expect to hear?

I can hear people going up and down stairs. Sprung-loaded doors slamming. Music through the walls when the teenage boy is left on his own

It isn`t terrible but it is annoying. I use headphones when I play my music, since I became aware of noise transmission

The houses were officially finished in 2003. How much do you hear and what type of accomodation are you in? How do you cope when it becomes niggling?

We're in a Victorian terrace and we don't hear much at all. When it's silent in the early morning and I'm downstairs, I do hear the father next door yelling at his adult son to get out of bed. At one point it was so loud we yelled back 'Paul! Get up!' and then we all had a laugh about it over the garden fence later.
I am not stubborn. I am merely correct.
  • There should be a certain amount of noise insulation between properties. I once had a building site that had to rebuilt because the builders failed to provide enough noise insulation between homes on the semis they constructed. They paid for the owners to move into hotels while the work was done.

I sold my mid-terraced victorian house after Mr & Mrs Antisocial and their sons Noisy and Little S0d moved in. They must have ripped out all the carpets and plaster and she would just shout all day. Nice. Prior to that I never heard a thing.

Bought a detached house - bliss. The amp goes up to 11 on weekends and I still don't annoy anyone. :j

London flat isn't bad to be honest. Occasionally hear the odd party going on and our neighbour likes her music loud (always on Tuesday nights for some reason) but will turn it down when I knock on the door at 4am in my jammies!!! I'm more conscious of my noise in London, being surrounded by others!!! :D

I don't get much neighbour noise at all in my newbuild flat (built 2005). I can hear when somebody is hammering, and occasionally when a child is running or jumping upstairs; I can also hear when the neighbours are letting themselves in and out of their front doors - because although the walls are decently constructed, the doors are not great insulators.

I am a semiprofessional singer and often check with my neighbours that I am not causing a disturbance when I practise. The neighbours say they have never even heard me or my digital piano.

I live in an end terrace. The only noise I hear is the toddler next door crying and that`s not often. My loudspeakers are on the side that`s not attached and my neighbours tell me that they don`t hear anything. I ask them now and again as my mam began to go deaf at my age and I don`t want to spend years in denial like she did - just putting the volume up and up.
  • I live in the top flat of a converted Victorian terrace and you can hear absolutely everything from the flat below: it's a nightmare. The flat is owned by people who live elsewhere and only used it occasionally, but now they've rented it out.
I was intending to move anyway: I'm just waiting for the lease to be extended and then I can start looking. My main concern is finding myself in a similar situation. I'm moving within Central London which, with the ridiculous prices, means another one bedroom flat so I'll have to be very careful.
I've always preferred older buildings, but having lived with all these problems, I'm intending to avoid conversions.

We live on the top floor of flats (2006) and we can hear everything from the left and right side of us. We can also hear anything which goes on in the lounge of the flat below. Both us and one of our neighbours have complained about noise to one of the flats but that was because they were playing music too loud at silly times of the night, they now keep their music loud only during the day! I cannot wait to complete on our new house.

We are semi detached and NEVER hear a peep from our neighbours, we apolgised to them because our cat tears around and with laminate flooring he sounds like a child but they said they have never heard him.

My parents house is a different matter though, they are end terrace and you hear everything, my MILs house is the same as well, terrible noise
House purchase completed 6th December whole process took 4 months.

Hang in there everyone it is worth it

All I hear from nect door is sneezing. He sneezes really loud at all times of the day and night and sometimes 20 times in a row. The people over the road from me said it woke their baby up!

I live at the end of a victorian terrace and I am so glad that only one side is attached. My neighbours are the most noisey people I've ever known. The dad is splitting the front bedroom and decides to start putting plasterboard up at about 6am on a sunday. we hear their doorbell, their mobile phones are louder than ours when ours are on the sofa next to us, I know the she had an affair with a younger man a few months ago I know trhe daughter smokes but her parent's don't know as when her parent's are out she and her friends stand outside the front of the house talking loudly, there's not one day where I don't hear them and it's doing my nut and I can't wait to move!! even though I'm moving to another terrace but it'll be a new townhouse style altohugh since reading this thread I might buy a detached!! Also my neighbours haven't had sex for quite some time as i ALWAYS hear that!!
    Hell yeah!!
