The BBC's Panorama did a very interesting programme on this very issue. Here's some information about it: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b012s1xj.

Bad luck OP - but at least your fiance was physically OK. Cars and money issues can be fixed - decent fiances are irreplaceable!

    Best wishes. xx

Just read the OP again, carefully

The car in front slammed on its breaks on a blind bend,

I'm quite sure she will have been expected to be travelling at 5-10mph round the blind bend, what if a 15 tonner had been coming int he opposite direction, she would need to prepare her positioning on that said bend...

Even if someone does an emergancy stop infront of you, you are supposed to give them the room to brake hard if need be..
Fact is if she'd been prepared she would have stopped in time and not hit the car..

I'm sure they are milking this however, and will try to claim everything from broken nails to a broken neck...

I know how hard it is to deal with being in an accident I'm someone who got the blame through another lying in an accident, so I really do get it, but I don't think the blind bend will cut it with the old bill..

We'll see, I hope your gf is ok..

Thank you very much for all your advice and comments.

We have reported the incident to the insurance company, they are collecting the vehicle today from recovery company who collected it on the day on the instruction of the Police.

It has moved on a little as it turns out that the front vehicle not only stopped suddenly without any indication but also it did not have working brake lights. This was included in the Police report and was also confirmed by our Witness.

The Police arranged for our vehicle to be removed from the accident, and we were told that the other vehicle was going to the same place. We didn't see any of this happen as we were already on the way to the hospital.

I thought it was strange that the family of the driver in the front vehicle arrived so quickly (before any of the emergency services), but also they came with a vehicle and trailer with towing equipment. Even though the Police told us that both cars were to be recovered by the company they had contacted, the drivers family took their own vehicle away. As they are in control of the vehicle the insurance company cannot confirm that the brake lights were not working at the time of the accident.

We only found out today so have updated the insurance company with this information.

We have heard nothing so far from the Police, but I will post again when we hear some more news.

Thank you again for all your comments which have been very useful.

Your own insurer will do checks and if they find any match for this driver having similar incidents, then they will make further checks with the previous insurers involved in the other incidents.

  • I am convinced I was the victim of this crime last week also so you have my sympathy.

This was on/leaving a roundabout, a car actually left it then doubled back onto the roundabout before speeding off causing me to go in to the car in front which I genuinely believe could have carried on going.

The next thing 4 guys rush at me aggressively hardly acknowledging the car thats caused it all and in an incredibly ruthless way they all go around the car with their camera phones etc etc - they were incredibly organized. Its so dangerous and having reported it to the police and the IFB I intend to fight it.

I also found that its on the direct line top ten list of hotspots for it so now I feel certain! Google that just incase it comes up.

Its a very nasty, dangerous business which needs to be dealt with.

    Hi Alarma

I absolutely agree with you. It is so dangerous and we were fortunate that my fiance only had very minor bruises. I hope you were not hurt.

From the insurance side we are so grateful to the very forthcoming Witness who has provided statements to both the Police and our insurer.

There's a good link to a Panorama programme that RuthnJasper posted on this thread. Thanks for the Direct Line info, I'll check our area to see if anything like this has happened before around here.

Good luck with your situation and please let us know how you get on.
