02 sim not working and I've got approx. £35 on it :(

Hi all

Not sure what's happened to the sim but as the title states, it's not working anymore. I've had it since Jan. 2010 and up until today, it was absolutely fine.

There's nothing wrong with the phone since I've got an Orange sim and it's working fine. I've tried the 02 one on another phone and it's the same problem.

And as you can see, I've got about £35 on that sim and don't want to lose any of it.

If I get another 02 sim, will 02 transfer everything from that sim to the new one ? - including all my contacts ?

Thanks in advance.

Have you been using it? I am asking this because all PAYG sims have to be used at least once every 6 months to remain active.

    Also, is 'another' phone unlocked?

If so, just call your network and ask for a replacement card with the same number. Or go to one of their shops.

Re the contacts I am not sure that they will be able to recover them from a faulty card, but it's worth asking. Are your sure that they were saved in the sim, not in the phone? You can use your call history in the phone to recover some.

They can give you a new SIM with the same number and transfer the credit.

They can't do anything about your contacts, but an independent mobile phone shop is likely to have a SIM card reader that might be able to copy them over.

Sounds like you have let the Sim run out

With Payandgo Sims you have to make or receive a call with in 6mths or the network will shut it down and you loose all the credit that's on the Sim

Also they will not transfer any credit to another Sim you loose it all

You could just ring O2 and see what they say you may be lucky and they might re-enable it but they don't normally.

Thanks guys, but it was only a day or two ago that I used it.

If the sim's damaged, I can't see how that would have happened. I've not dropped the phone or anything

To make a call or to send a text for the majority of networks.

They will if the sim is faulty and they replace it.
  • Is the SIM absolutely not recognised or does it just not register with o2 ?

Can you see your contacts on the SIM in either phone ?

If so, Maplin sell a SIM reader which may help you recover your contacts (their part N96HR)

    The SIM's not being recognised.

    Unfortunately no.

Luckily I've got an Orange SIM which has more or less the same contacts.

electronic compnents CAN just 'wear out'. Your phone gets warm when you use it, the TEEEEENY metal contacts between your SIM and the phone expand and contract as the phone warms up and cools down.

Eventually, they stop working. It's life.

Thanks but should that really happen after about 2 and a half years?

I've got an Orange SIM that's been working for 12 years now.

I would assume that it the Orange SIM that is exceptional here, rather than the O2 one.

It might also be that 12 years ago SIMs were made to a higher grade than more recently, they are churned out in VAST quantities now.

And finally, it depends on the amounts of usage, relative heat of each phone when in use, whether you carry it around in your pocket more than your orange phone, etc etc.

A SIM now costs very little to produce, I think it's unreasonable to expect it to last indefinately. After all, the vast majority of users ditch their phone and SIM after 2 years at most (not me or you, but most folk seem to)
