I signed my Mum up with Primus recently and today Gordon telephoned her to say that since last Thursday, 22nd March 2007, they now offer line rental at £10.99 a month. I enquired about the cost of 1571, caller display and call waiting which she uses at the moment and he said it would be free. I said BT are charging for some of these features from 1st of March or 1st of May and he then said it would be like for like. I asked did that mean they would then be charging for these features too he said he checked with his manager and said it would be like for like.
Should my Mum & Dad change their line rental to Primus or just stay with BT? They have Sky too, isn't it easier to get Sky when you have a BT line or did I imagine that? Gordon is telephoning back at 4:45pm for an answer.

Stay with BT.
BT's line rental if £11 if paid by DD or £10.75 is paid by DD and with paper-free billing.
BT only charge for Caller Display and/or 1571 if you don't make at least 6 chargeable calls per quarter via them - so that's 11p/month or 33p/quarter incl. VAT!
I don't know whether Primus will charge for Call Waiting (I'd be surprised if they don't) - I certainly don't like the sound of that 'like for like' reply!Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -

THANKS! He has telephoned twice within 2 minutes but I couldn't answer as my mobile rang and there was a call waiting to get through on it as well.
I didn't like the sound of the "like for like" reply either.0 -
Hey guys just off the phone to Primus on the back of this post. Spoke with Gordon(as mentioned) and he gave me more information than posted.
Looks like they are contacting the existing customers 1st with the offer of Line rental £10.99 with 1 month free.
I asked the question about the features and was told the following:
1471 - Free
Call Barring - 56p (plus VAT)
Call Display - 56p (plus VAT)
call divert - 56p (plus VAT)
Very happy with the company regarding their Broadband and telephone service. Think i for one will be changing over for the 1 bill situation.
Can't stand BT and there constant changes.

Gordon is just after giving me that information. The above charges are monthly. There is also an 18 month contract.0 -
Its not a good idea to move your line rental away from BT,for a number of reasons. Nor can i see any price advantage in this case.
BT Online Billing Line Rental £10.75 a month. Primus Online Billing line Rental £10.99p (18 Month Contract)
The calling feature prices given appear to be a little odd? In any case caller display with BT requires you only to make two calls a month say 11p a month. Where as primus are charging 56p ex vat a month.
Their no doubt stop you from using the likes of 18185 etc,and you want be able to use the BT override 1280 service to get cheaper ngn calls.
You have to pay by d/d.
Then their is the potential repair problems, which could prove costly.0 -
I hope this thread helps others to come to a decision!0

It's not a good idea if you are moving to Talk talk you mean. Primus are only renting the line from BT.
I think Primus are asking for the 18 month contract to tie in with the likes of BT etc.
I don't believe there will be problems with 18185 when the line rental has been transfered. The other services were a problem in the past as they couldnt decide who would deal with them - IE BT or Primus.
You also get the first month free which is £11 of a saving up front.
As for D/D, have you asked the question.
Good enough for me!!!0 -

No i dont mean Talk Talk .
BT do not have a 18 month contract for line rental. Its only 3 months if wiring etc exists and 12 months for a new installation and then in both cases you can elect to use who you like for your calls. You cant do this if you move line rental to Primus.
Whilst you might not believe their want be a problem with the likes of 18185, they can bar them if they so desire, where as BT have to allow you access.
Over the period of 18 months the £11 (£10.75p) will be probaly be.wiped out
Yes i did ask them about d/d they will also accept payment by continous credit card authority. Failure to pay by these methods incurs a £5 a month surcharge.
Some people have been faced with large repair bills when moving line rental. Heres an example: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=2819530 -
Primus have a long history of using their T & Cs and general customer inertia/ignorance to wriggle out of their contractual obligations. See this long thread (over thirteen months old) to show how many MSE members have been finessed out of incentives offered to enrol with some of their services. You should proceed with caution with this company - it makes sense that he who sups with the devil should use a long spoon.0
