yes it does cyclonbri1- when price is an issue, a wooden door can be sanded, primed painted or varnished and restored to former glory (£100 incl new handle ), a UPVC door can be
    fixed

I assumed price was an issue......
    just trying help
    MM

Hmmm if price was an issue a days elbow grease and £20 paint plus £10 on handles would be enough to spend.

I think the problem is related to the throw away society we now live in, unfortunately some still have money to waste.

No offence to you or the op, it's a general comment rather than specific to the ops question.:money:

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

  • To clarify, the old door is absolute rubbish, which I would possibly be willing to overlook except the last owners had a cat so there is a cat flap on the door. We currently have it all taped up to stop the other neighborhood cats from getting in!

    This is MSE, :money::money: man

    WOW that is a reaction!!!

I've more than pleased with the price I've paid for the 14 windowws & 2 composite doors I've received from Heritage Trade Frames. I'd recommend them to anyone.

Errr would you expect to pay £100 just to have a door sanded and repainted??, The:money::money:was to remind everyone why we are supposedly here.

It was simply a genuine reaction that someone thought it should cost that much.

To most diyers it would cost even less than I stated.
They would have some method of sanding, and a bit of sandpaper to do it

    £0

They would have at least some gloss or primer/undercoat hanging around, paint cost halved.
And if I really wanted to be pedantic, a few hours polishing up the handles and the jobs a goodun for a tenner max.Just my point of view you understand.

But the OP wants a new door as stated, just giving the options for and against;)

if the OP just needs s new front door then they can be relatively inexpensive...

When we first moved into our house we needed a new front door, went to wickes and bought a wooden one for a few hundred pounds....cant remember who fitted it but it was a family member who was reasonably confident at diy....a lock and some door furnature and the job was fairly cheap.

we've just had that door replaced about 20 years on...basically the door was showing wear and tear and probably could have got by with a good sand down etc but the door frame was in really bad shape...this time we opted for composite with a fully encased top sky light bit and obviously new frame etc...really pleased with it as it all seems so much more substantial than the old door and frame...total cost fitted was £1200 with upgraded leaded panels.

It really depends on the condition of your door frame as to whether you need a whole new fitting or just the door...I'd also recommend that you get a couple of quotes from smaller door or window companies rather than the larger nationals who will quote to replace everything hence the price you were quoted....if the frame is ok then theres no real reason to have a complete fitted door so that should reduce your costs by quite a bit.
