New Door

We bought our home a few months ago and desperately need a new front door (to the outside). We had a quote from one of the 'well known' door companies last night and it started at £1050. Is that normal? Is it something we could do ourselves or hire a local builder or our very DIY savvy brother in law to do? We aren't fussy - it's our first home and not our 'forever' home so uPVD would be fine. Any suggestions for cheaper places, options, tradesmen, etc. would be very welcomed!

    its the usual answer
shop around with local trades and ask for 3 quotes
for info both my back and front door cost £1600 but that was a few years ago and the highest spec I could get at that time.
don't even bother with the big companies unless your doing it for a laugh:)
    63 mortgage payments to go.

    Zero wins 2016 😥
  • I fiited a Wickes uPVC composite front door and frame recently. Delighted with the result. Every bit as good as my neighbour's amazon door. Cost about £400 I think - took me half a day to fit it.

I bought my door of e-bay for £26 but don't have a savvy anyone to fit it so I paid £90 for a great joiner from 'rated people'. The door looks great and there are always quite a few on.
    Just something to consider anyway.
    Good luck

Ebay has to be worth a shot if you can wait for the right size to come up locally.

S/H, new to size or mismeasures, they are all on there.

I've bought several for very good prices.

Any reasonable diyer can fit on, and upvc is about the easiest, a few frame fixer and spacers, a tube of silicone and jobs a goodun;);)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

  • yes it does cyclonbri1- when price is an issue, a wooden door can be sanded, primed painted or varnished and restored to former glory (£100 incl new handle ), a UPVC door can be
    fixed

    http://www.plastic-surgeon.co.uk/services/plastic-and-grp-repair

or inner door panel can be replaced if the frame is in good order (prices usually start at £70) and can be fitted by a joiner/ handyman

    http://www.phoenixdoorpanels.co.uk/door-offers.html

again new doorfurniture and it looks like brand new, OP also said it's not their forever home and asked if it can be done by them, so I assumed price was an issue......
    just trying help
