My current speaker cable is not color coded or has no negative or positive marks on them.
Connect one speaker to one channel output using a single cable from each speaker lead leaving the other single cables disconnected. When the speaker works, mark the connected cables.
    Quick, simple, and free.

Read the thread again and don't quote selectively. It should be obvious to you what the OP is trying to do. If you do not understand the question, why post because as you keep telling us "Life's too short to argue with idiots".

I can't tell the difference by listening and it's simply bugging me. Someone suggested doing a battery test but I wasn't convinced about that & yes I have tried it. I thought for the sake of £3.50 I will find out for sure.

I understand the question, thanks. The op needs to identify individual cables. This can be done by elimination.

    The method suggested will work.

I hadn't got you down as an idiot Fifer but this method "When the speaker works, mark the connected cables" does not check that the speakers are wired in phase with each other to give optimal sound reproduction.

After identifying the cables they can be connected in phase.

I don't consider myself to be an idiot. If you have two twin speaker cables (normal with a stereo), use one side of one twin for one terminal of a speaker and one side of the other twin for the other terminal on the same speaker (both connected to one channel of the amp). If no sound, swap ends until there is, then mark the connected end of each side to indicate the polarity of the cables.

    This might help.

FYI for what its worth, twin speaker cable often has a ridge on one side so that the ends can easily be identified.

PS Settle for a Model 9 Avometer!!

Fifer - thanks for your explanation, however this method assumes that you can use both the left and right speaker cables together for elimination. The OP has already installed their speakers but is unsure that they are wired correctly. This method would not be "quick, simple and free" if the left and right cables had already been installed to the speakers in trunking or buried in the walls etc. and could not be tested together?

The most obvious, quickest and simplest method to ensure that the speakers are connected correctly in phase is to use a small AA battery - might not be free but most people would have a small battery available to use.
