Sherwood Nottingham

Hi,

I've just been to view a house in Sherwood which is in my budget of 170K and fills most of my criteria (period house which has been renovated with spare room for lodger). My only concern is safety. I've had a look on police.co.uk and there is around 350 crimes for the month of June in a one mile radius (that's pretty good for Nottingham, if you look at St Ann's it's getting close to 1500). The area seem safe enough and I've spoken to one of the neighbours and they say it's ok. Does anyone know the Sherwood Area around Winchester Road. Some people say NG5 has some of the highest crime in Britain but according to the police website obviously not. I'm not originally from Nottingham so not a local.

Are there other nice areas in the North of Nottingham? I've ruled South Nottingham out as most of the places I would like to live are situated on a flood plain so to me it's not worth it.

TIA

This website might help (if it's not the one that you have already seen). This will not only give you the number of crimes, but the type of crime too.

Also, speak to people who live in the area close to where the house is that you have seen. Do you know people at work or in your social circle who are not new to the area? It might be worth asking them.

P.S. Also visit the area at different times of the day, including a visit in the evening/night and see what you make of it.

Nottingham is a large place - so there are good and bad parts of every area. You cant really just rule somewhere out due to "reputation". NG5 is a massive postcode - covers Arnold, Mapperley, Daybrook, Sherwood and Woodthorpe. Anyone that says its rough doesnt know what theyre talking about. Certainly, parts of some of those areas arent the best, others are stunning.

Sherwood is nice enough - some nice bits, others not so great. I used to live just up the road from Winchester St and never encountered any problems. The location is good as its pretty close to the shops on Mansfield Road

Go and take a drive around the street you are looking at, at night and at the weekend. See what its like

I agree completely with the above poster, NG postcodes cover huge areas, especially nearer the city. Some streets in that area will be absolutely fine, others may not be (same as every other city postcode).

Domino 9 thanks it's a different site so I will have a look. I have been in the early evening but not late at night and it seemed fine. I'm in London at the moment but will try to take a trip up in the next week or two will have a chat to people in the corner shop etc.
Lisa - thanks I didn't realise Mapperley Park came under NG5 and that is a lovely area too. On the crime map there was very little trouble around Winchester Street so I guess that is reassuring.
    balletshoes yes I agree.

Thanks everyone. I've just split up from my bf so I'll be doing this move by myself so safety is obviously my main concern. I just received an email from the Development officer from Sherwood and he has said it has the 2nd lowest crime rating in Nottingham so that's reassuring.

I've heard of real issues with robbery in the area, especially if you seem to be rich, I would be on the look out for a fat man dressed in brown and a Kevin Costner look-a-like.

I wouldn’t even bother calling the local law enforcement, I hear he's useless and quite a pain to deal with, also can be quite ruthless.

I would just avoid driving through the forest unarmed or unescorted, and you’ll be fine!

    (Sorry I just couldn’t resist)

:rotfl: I haven't seen a Kevin Costner lookalike, but our Friar Tuck hangs around the city centre (Market Square or near M&S) as he's a leaflet-tout for the Galleries of Justice :).

  • Hi

I've lived in Mapperley for 30 years and I've never experienced any crime/burglaries, etc. It's a lovely area and you wouldn't believe I share the same postcode (NG3) as St Ann's. Yes I've heard of problems in St Ann's but I've walked through the area many times on the way to Nottingham with no concerns.

Again Sherwood is a lovely place. I shop there regularly and my vet is on Winchester Street.

Take these statistics with a pinch of salt.

    Any advice just ask.

Just nit-picking but Mapperley Park is a large area. Parts of it are NG5 and other parts are NG3.
