Getting Cheaper RAC Cover

I called the RAC to cancel last month as my renewal was £130 something (for just me) and if I bought via quidco I could get £20 cashback and also 3 months free. When I called they then asked me if they could try and reduce the price for me...and on the phone the man got me 15 months cover for me and my husband for £94 (this worked out cheaper than doing it through the website with quidco). The only catch is this was with Standard cover (roadside, relay and at home), not the solutions package. So I'd be entitled to £25 off next year if I didnt call out this year. Whereas the solutions is 10% each year of not calling out I believe?

    Hope that helps.

Got this in the end! ;)

    Thanx

I've been with RAC and GreenFlag, and only twice in approx 6/7 callouts has the breakdown covers own staff come out to me.

Both RAC and GF use the same independants for alot of the jobs, just depends who they have in the area.

I personally prefer the independants, I like to think I'm supporting a local industry as opposed to a big company (although I know the big company is still making money from calling out the independant to me!)

Personally, I like companies like RAC and Tescos. Whilst a lot of people complain that the big companies crush the smaller companies, its the big companies that force the smaller companies to differentiate by offering a good service. Go back 20 years ago when the small companies had all the power, they would screw you over whenever and wherever possible and to work for them most of the time wasn't through judgement of expertise.

We just need larger firms to sort out local plumbing/electricians/carpenter services better now.

I got my renewal quote this week which was £117.60 (with 20% discount for not calling them out last year) for Level 3 (roadside, recovery and homestart). I rang them yesterday to enquire how much itd cost for vehicle cover rather than individual (cos my partner drives car too so thought we should both be covered) and they quoted £153. I said Id talk to 'hubbie' and get back to them, so guy then said well if you want to renew now for vehicle I can get it for you for £125. I then asked about discount for direct debit one off annual payment (as they are quoting a £14.00 discount for that in their bumpf) and he said because of giving me discount anyway he couldnt do that but hed give me another £5 off...so by end of it I got us both covered for our vehicle for £120 which was only £2.40 more than if Id stuck on my own. Am quite chuffed with that not as low as some people have got but shows you can get the quotes down if you act uniterested by their first quote and that they obviously have the leeway to offer discounts to keep your business. As an aside when I have had to call RAC out in the past I have found them to be really reliable and efficient and so I woudl rather stick with them than go for a company I know little of, breaking down is stressful enough without wondering if the recovery is gonna turn up or be any good. Does anyone have cheaper cover with lesser known recovery co and found it to be good? I would be interested for future reference!
