Getting Cheaper RAC Cover
Has anyone managed to get RAC cover cheaper (assuming you don't have Tesco Clubcard points)?
I am looking to get Solutions 3, Roadside, Relay, At Home, but does anyone know how to get this cheaper. I know of the 3 months free on the website.
Also, can anyone confirm that it is RAC that come out when you join Norwich Union?
Thanx

yes norwich union and rac are linked..
I have had 2 free years of RAC breakdown, but this is purely because I learnt & Passed with BSM..
See what incentives Norwich union offer.. It may pay to set up a savings account, deposit £1 a month and maybe get a big saving on RAC brekadown cover..?0 -
I called the RAC to cancel last month as my renewal was £130 something (for just me) and if I bought via quidco I could get £20 cashback and also 3 months free. When I called they then asked me if they could try and reduce the price for me...and on the phone the man got me 15 months cover for me and my husband for £94 (this worked out cheaper than doing it through the website with quidco). The only catch is this was with Standard cover (roadside, relay and at home), not the solutions package. So I'd be entitled to £25 off next year if I didnt call out this year. Whereas the solutions is 10% each year of not calling out I believe?
Hope that helps.0 -
Yes, I can use an benefits code to get joint cover standard down to £94 although they said they couldn't add the additional 3 months. Will ask again.
Thanx

Not really sure how i managed it but phoned up just to see how much their cover was for single person breakdown cover was (i knew about the £20 quidco cashback). Anyway cant remember what i was quoted but then said i didnt want it and was only phoning for an idea on price. He then asked if there was any other drivers so i said yes. So he gave a price of something like £80 for joint cover and that would include home start too. I still said no thanks was only looking and would be shopping around.
He then said i tell you what i will do joint breakdown and at home for £39.99. Well i snatched his hands off!! Cant believe what a bargain that was.
Took out there and then which was rather lucky as daughter used the service about 3 days later. The callout man was brill and the overall service was faultless. I would recommend to anyone.0 -
Hi AMO,
I've moved your thread over to the Motoring board to see if you can get more replies there. Have you read Martin's article on Breakdown Cover?

Thanx. Yup, but I am reluctant to go with AutoAid. I've not heard the same positive reviews.
Thanx.

AutoAid has nothing but positive reviews from this website.
Give it a go!0 -
True, but AutoAid uses independent contractors like GreenFlag does.
The good thing about them is that they use independent contractors who take pride in their work and respond quickly to earn a living for their own business.
The bad thing about them is that they use independent contractors who can choose to do their Xmas shopping as a priority over coming out to a breakdown scene as opposed to paid employees who have volunteered to work anyway.
Whilst response times when it is convinient for contractors is way better than employees, when it is not so convinient, they are pretty poor. Most people have things to do during the festive season and fewer contractors are available for breakdown.
Whilst overall response times are positive, RAC & AA will be with you much faster during festive seasons etc. I would like to know if a lot of people have experienced otherwise, but that certainly was the problem with breakdown companies that used independent contractors a few years ago.

I've been with RAC and GreenFlag, and only twice in approx 6/7 callouts has the breakdown covers own staff come out to me.
Both RAC and GF use the same independants for alot of the jobs, just depends who they have in the area.
I personally prefer the independants, I like to think I'm supporting a local industry as opposed to a big company (although I know the big company is still making money from calling out the independant to me!)0 -
And I got GF Recovery Plus, through Quidco, for my 406 HDi,for the princely sum of £45.
Ken.That's my mutt in the picture above.0
