How do I get my account deleted?

  • You cannot - you have two options: simply stop posting, or manually delete all of your posts.

Please do not take offence at this but I was hoping for an official reply.

It does seem strange there is no option to delete my account, after all I wouldn't like to find that a dormant account had been hijacked later on and used, I would prefer to know that it is closed permanently, I am not expecting all my posts to be deleted, just a guarantee that the account is closed, for a site that supposedly promotes fairness it is odd that they do not have this option.

Maybe you could ask the Forum Team if it could be set to Posting Privileges Removed

If your looking for an official reply, you might consider e-mailing them officially, forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com. They are not likely to post on the forum's the reasons why they DO NOT delete your account.

As post #2 suggests, your options are to either stop posting on the site and\or delete all your posts.

Just as you fear someone hijacking your existing account and impersonating you if it remains, were you even remotely able to delete your account, there would likewise be nothing to stop someone creating a new account with your deleted username and impersonating you. Catch22 I'm afraid, as your account will never be deleted.

Actually on most forums when they delete your account there is an automatic permanent bar on anyone re-registering that username.

That may be the case on most forums - As MSE don't delete your account, the only bar on a username is likely to be a PPR.

And that can easily be circumvented because the username is case sensitive.

I'm !!!!!! but there is also a user called !!!!!!.

What brainbox decided to make it case sensitive?
This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com

None taken, still won't change the outcome. ;)

It is covered in the forum rules

How can I delete my username and posts?

We do not remove usernames or past posts. It disrupts the history of the forum for all users.
If you don't want to post on the forum any more, simply stop posting. No one else will use that account. However, if there are specific posts of yours which cause you concern email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com for help. Remember you are able to delete your own posts.

It doesn't cover it because I am not looking for my username or posts to be removed, I want to close my account to prevent it being hijacked in the future, most forums can close an account and still leave the posters username and posts intact.

There is no point in deleting my own posts if they have been quoted and if I am the one who created the thread then I cannot delete those posts, it doesn't resolve the actual issue of closing the account.

I sometimes think that people who create these rules lack an understanding of how forums work and what is technically possible.
