As suggested by earlier posters, it isn't permitted for someone to claim housing benefit when they live in the same property as a close relative who is their landlord (its sometimes permitted, though, if the tenant and their related landlord live in different properties).

The HB forms will clearly ask if there is a family relationship between landlord and tenant, therefore if the information provided was false, it will be treated as fraud.

If you are (or your partner is) renting a home from a close family member who shares all or part of the home with you, you won’t get housing benefit, even if you are paying them rent. This applies if you are renting from a:
    • parent or step-parent
    • father-in-law or mother-in-law
    • child or step-child
    • son-in-law or daughter-in-law
    • brother or sister (including half-brothers and half-sisters)
    • brother-in-law or sister-in-law
    • partner of any of the above.

For what reason were you claiming income support? What category did you fit into?

Your husband's father-in-law is his wife's dad - so that means your dad.
