T-Mobile Tethering Question

I have a phone that can do the tethering thing, I also have unlimited internet ('Browsing').

What stops people from hooking it up to the PC and just having unlimited internet browsing on the PC? Can T-Mobile tell if your using tethering?

Its really coming in handy atm because our internet is down and will be down till tomorrow or Thursday so still being able to use the net on my pc (minus any heavy stuff) through my phone is pretty awesome.

And does anyone know what the portable wifi is about? I wonder if that can be used just like the tethering, where you can access an unlimited amount websites assuming the wifi mode doesn't put an extra strain on the bandwidth usage.

I'm on tmobile with unlimited internet. If you tether then it uses quite a lot. I think there is a fair usage clause. It is also slower than a normal broadband connection but until your broadband is fixed no problem and a lot better than nothing.

Yes they can as far as my networking knowledge is concerned. A couple years ago, T-Mobile started charging for tether access on some contracts as you got a payment screen as you tried to access any site through the tether method. It depends on your contract. My iPhone contract allows me unlimited tether but i'm sure it's monitored for overuse against certain criteria.

Do you mean accessing the tethered service via Wi-Fi? The same bandwidth rules apply. All it is is a different method for accessing the modem in your phone. Same for when you use bluetooth or USB.

Thanks guys, yeah its slower than normal BB but for what I use it for, you dont really see a difference. I think its great because you have unlimited browsing and from what I know, Tmobile only count the heavy downloads towards your fair usage, i may be wrong but i was told by tmobile ill always be able to browse sites no matter what.

I've definitely gone over my fair usage if you include all of my browsing and im still running fast, usually H+, but files and streaming alone would still be under my fair usage.

@Tunster2 yeah thats what i meant, thanks for that, i think ill just stick to the usb method, i only use it now and then, my galaxy note is big enough to use comfortably without a monitor.

Should have my net back within 48 hours.. hopefully
