I'm in Devon, and my Freeview service is peepobellybumdrawers, to put it nicely. Unwatchable for a good proprtion of the time, particularly on BBC channels.0

Maybe so, but the OP has already got sky, she could change that to freesat? Is that the right term I'm using? But again it also depends if she's out of contract. That's what I did with my cable service. Not that I had a great big package, it was only 1 up from the free one, but it was the first to go.4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0 -
Ah right so someone who has worked for over 20 years is not allowed a bit of help but instead has to go to work, come home, stare at 4 walls, not be able to communicate with the outside world, and get a shot credit file to boot, yea I get it now
Get a second job? What about you getting a job, hard times, needs must. We are all in the same boat.....Skint but Debt Free at Last :T0 -

My husband worked for near on 40 years and lost his job and all he got was 2 payments from JSA. £24 and an £18.
I think for what you get is very reasonable and should be able to manage quite comfortably on that.Just a bit of cutting down here and there will give you extra..0 -

The OP has a disability and can't work....
The OP's husband sounds as if he's on a medical suspension atm.
I wanna know where all these jobs are coming from, there really isn't that much out there, especially when you will need to keep your normal hours of work free for going back when the medical suspension is over.
It's easy to say get a job, but there just aren't a lot of jobs around, not a lot in this area anyway, don't think there's a lot anywhere.4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0 -
For goodness sake it was in response to your earlier post. It's very hard for a disabled person to go without some form of transport. If it was irrelevant why did you suggest it?
I agree sky tv isn't a necessity. However, some people also see the tv as a lifeline. My mother's tv is on constantly because she sees it as her company. At this late stage in her life I don't grudge her having it. It's not my thing, but even having the background noise on helps my mother and makes her feel less lonely. Which she's been now since my father died. No matter how many times a week we are there, we will never fill the gap left from my father.
Anubis, I think you've hit the nail on the head dear. I had forgotten about the HB being looked at that way.
And for once I agree with Spamfree that sky tv shouldn't be looked at when doing these considerations. But disability can leave terrible feelings of isolation.
Would she or would she not be hundreds of pounds better off if she gave up the car and got the money instead?0 -
So now your saying it's relevant again spamfree? Make your mind up.
I don't even know if the DLA car can be given up early, but no I wouldn't give it up, I'd give up other things. Like the sky TV, try to cut back on leccy and gas. I class my car (not a motability car btw) an essential, it would cost a lot more for me to sell it and put the money towards taxis. If she'd to give it up, how would she get to appointments etc? Taxis are expensive too. And if the OP is anything like my daughter, would need rather a lot of them, so the saving is eaten up anyway.
BTW, that's what the mobility element of DLA is for, help getting about, I'm glad when people take advantage of the mobility scheme, it means their money is going on what it's intended for.
So you would rather her give up her car and spent the money on something it's not given for. And yet on other threads........4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0 -

But, again, surely this is about choice? True, the mobility element of DLA is for just what it says on the tin, but if your choice is to keep Sky, come what may, then having the money, instead of the car, gives you the choice to spend that money, as you wish. Doesn't it?
I'm choosing not to buy any clothes this year, except to replace my bunion-accommodating Comfy Fit shoes, as they wear out, so that I can have the choice as to which Alzheimers Day Clubs my DH attends.
I could risk not being accused of DOC by kitting us out in designer clothes, and something smarter than my Primark handbags, and then I'd get these costs subsidised - but I wouldn't have the choice that I have now.
I'm sure there are many tax payers, who, given the choice, would prefer that their taxes were spent on helping, say, sick children, and not subsidising Sky, flat screen TVs, the latest mobile etc.
Personally, I've had a great couple of weeks watching my Freeview TV and seeing the Olympics. I would have loved to have gone, but the prices for good seats were steep. Instead I've chosen to go to the Paralympics, in the main stadium, for the incredible same-as-2-coffees price of £5! :T

I don't know if she should give up her car or not, totally her choice. If it's possible, last time I dealt with things like that it was a 3 year contract? Just picking up on Spamfree and his/her relevant/irrelevant issues. Spamfree can't make up his/her mind on this issue.
Do I think sky tv should be taken into account, ofc not. Do I think her debts should be taken into account, ofc not.
On other threads Spamfree has criticised someone on ESA for buying a mobile phone. How dare they. And basically had a pop at everyone who's on benefits. We all must cut our cloth accordingly. And if you can afford to go to the paralympics, good on ya, hope you enjoy it.4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0 -
Of course, giving up a Motability car doesn't necessarily mean being carless. Many people find it cheaper to run an older car with their DLA and have money left over for other expenses.0
