I'd consider the US and possibly a multi centre-really you can choose where you like -I like the idea of a day or two in Fort Lauderdale relaxing after the wedding -then off to Orlando for some theme parks then back to Fort Lauderdale for a cruise before flying home..........or on the West coast -a few days in San Diego or perhaps Santa Monica -then a few days in Vegas and then a cruise out of LA and home.

Otherwise what about a safari holiday followed by a few days on the beach ?

    MSE Florida wedding .....no problem

With your budget you could easily do Hawaii.

It can be both relaxing/beach holiday, but there are also tons of activities - volanoes, seeing dolphins on boat trips, surfing lessons, rainforest and waterfalls. And shopping - all the normal US stores.

And different islands to choose from. Ive travelled to a lot of places but Maui, Hawaii still remains my favourite place in the world.

You could do a couple of days in Oahu see Pearl Harbor, Waikiki etc. Then go to Maui for the real Hawaii, dormant volcano, beautiful beaches. Do a day trip to Lana'i where Bill Gates got married - so its got to be good :) Or Kauai - where some of Jurassic Park was filmed - very green and lush. Or the Big Island for active volcanoes and rainforest.

June is a perfect time of year to go there because its before the summer peak when its busiest, and accomodation prices drop after the middle of April. Ive been there in June and thats also the time of the Maui film festival, where they put a huge screen on a golf course and you can watch a film in a deck chair while the sun sets.

You can look up accomodation on VRBO.com.
  • How about a safari in South Africa followed by the beach in Mauritius? You can swm with dolphins (in the wild) in mauritius, plus there is beautiful scenery and lots of other stuff to do.

We went to Hong Kong for three nights, four nights in Bangkok and seven nights in Koh Samui in August 2010 for £3.5k.

Weather was good for the most part. There is either plenty to do in Koh Samui, or nothing at all but laze about, depending on where you go. We went to Bo Phut. Chaweng is the lively bit. Nathon has got a beach to die for. There are boat trips (Ang Thon National Park), you can island hop (Koh Pangan is close by), there are trips around the island, although you can hire a jeep or scooter cheaply and suit yourself. It poured down one night, this is to be expected in a tropical climate. Not sure about dolphin trips, I am sure you could find something though. We stayed in a garden villa. Eating out is v cheap - £6 for a decent meal and drink for 2. I really loved it and would go again. You could probably island hop for that sort of money. Avoid the western side during our summer as it's their rainy season.

You need to fly to Bangkok and get a smaller plane to the islands. Not for anyone who is a nervous flyer to be honest! I'm not nervous at all but I wasn't best pleased at being presented with a plane that had Indiana Jones style propellers.

I just had to say we have done exactly this trip as well,
    including the garden villa!
We went in 2000 it cost £700 each.....How prices change:)
  • Thanks all for your suggestions. I will spend the next few days researching to see what suits us best.

Can I ask if you think its best to try and book flights and hotels or go with a travel agent?

Price up both we have always found the USA cheaper to DIY, but have had some great deals from a TA also. when we went to Mauritius we had a better deal thru the TA then we could do DIY for the hotel that we wanted.

It depends completely on where you want to go, fly with, and stay.

I would never use a travel agent for Hawaii for example, because I always rent an apartment. Then book a flight seperately. The agents only have hotels.

But if I saw a good deal through a TA for a hotel i wanted to stay in in another part of the world I guess I might... but I have never used one to book a whole holiday apart from in Europe for package deals. I once got a really good deal with Thomas Cook for a Vegas hotel, but I booked my own flights.

I would also much rather deal with an airline or hotel direct if something went wrong and not a call centre at a travel agent who can pass the blame back and forth. You only need to read the posts on here to see that.

So you need to work out where you want to go first and where you want to stay, and then see what prices and options you have.

Definitely recommend Hawaii, however don't underestimate how far it is. You are looking at a 10 hour flight to LA then another 5 hours across the Pacific plus there is a 10 hour time difference to contend with. You might one to consider going for 2 weeks rather than just 10 days.
  • Been looking online and came across Fort Lauderdale, anybody here been?

A honeymoon is to relax and unwind after the wedding...

For some people maybe. We also did a monster US road trip.

Lounging around next to a pool or beach all day, every day for a couple of weeks or more would have driven us insane.
