Amex Platinum Cashback - Referred

Hi guys,

Just applied for the Amex Platinum Cashback and received the "we just need to do a few extra checks - we will let you know" message. From past experience (tried applying for this card in January) this probably means that the application will be denied but I just wanted to check if there is anyone on here that has had this message and then been accepted?

They did give me a reference and the number for their new accounts team so I'm tempted to give them a ring tomorrow and see if there is anything I can provide to support my application - again, anyone had any luck with this?

Its usually 50/50 as it means a manual check, depends on the person who does it

I got that message and also decided to call them for more information, which was a waste of a phone call. I was declined in the end, so took out the Capital One Aspire World card instead.
  • Hmm... Will try giving them a ring tomorrow. Amex use Experian, don't they? If so then I know there's nothing negative on my file, not so sure about equifax as they're a pain in the !!!! to deal with and have never got my file from them.

Might be the fact that I don't have a landline phone number ( CC companies need to start realising that many people don't bother anymore!) but other than that the only thing I can thnk of is that I opened a FD gold card in May but I wouldn't have thought that'd be such a big deal...

Will call them and write back on what happens..

American almost always refer people if they don't already have a card with Amex although my wife applied for the gold card, said she was referred and when she called up 2 hours later it had been approved.
  • Hmm... Just checked my credit report after applying yesterday and Amex made two searches. One was listed as credit card application and the other was Identification: Generic Check. Is this normal and does it actually count as two separate searches on my account?

One was an identity check and one was a credit check. The identity check won't affect your ability to get credit in the future.

I was referred by AmEx when I did my first one, swapped it later on with no problem.

As they're not a bank, they don't hold info on you if you haven't had one already.

First time I applied I got that message and was declined. Second time I applied 6 months later I got the same message and it was then accepted.
  • Ok, so I called Amex and I reckon I might be in luck, they have asked me to provide a copy of my passport or driving licence and a recent utility bill. Better than an outright refusal which is what I've had from them before. Surely the fact that they want these means that I should be accepted once I've provided them?

My one question is that the passport copy must be citified and the list of people that can do it is fairly restrictive:

    A member of the judiciary
Director, manager or officer or a regulated financial services business.
An official of an embassy, consulate or high commission
    Lawyer or public notary
    Serving police or customs officer
    Actuary or an accountant.

So... How do people normally do this kind of thing? I don't know any judges or company directors and I'm not quite sure what an actuary is! I guess a solicitor or accountant would do it but god knows how much they would charge. Police officer seems the easiest but can I just pop into a police station or stop a bobby on the beat?! All they have to do is sign and date the copy and write that they have seen the original and that it's me.

    Any thoughts?

My bank normally does it for me in branch.
