As long as you tell your bank beforehand (1-2 working days), and have the funds on the day, they normally don't have any problem letting you pay several tens of thousands with your debit card. It might involve a call from/to you and/or the merchant when you actually make the purchase, but if the payment is "pre-booked", that call will be very short and not embarrassing in any way.

Well, sometime tried to buy £250 of make up online with our Nationwide card. The only thing that stopped it was the Verified by Visa. The fraudster didn't know our password. However, we have been issued a new card and its messed everything up. I tried to buy cinema tickets with the new card and it wouldn't go through so now have to use the American Express. I don't really mind though as its a cashback card.

Just out of curiosity, how do you know that?

If I ever do a transaction but cancel if before Verified with Visa is confirmed, I never see any official record of that transaction anywhere - did they call you?

We made a transaction of 1k on OH's Barclays debit card, when I made OH call up to tell them the bank said thanks for telling us but we didnt need to know. Better safe than sorry...

I was prevented from paying for a new macbook (£1k) on the apple website twice when trying to use my debit card. I then called my bank (Yorkshire) and they told me they would lift the block but in future I should call and tell them for big purchases.
    Sorted out my finances...

You can call them in advanced to let them know but in my experience Barclays are fairly poor at taking notice of these kinds of notes. That said, I have made many payments above your 3k without notice and as long as I am not paying RBS then it all goes through fine (Payments to RBS get blocked every time)

Nationwide have fraud stops in place she does'nt know what she talking about!

    Maybe she does
    Her experience matches mine.
I paid £21000 for a car using a Nationwide debit card.
I did not inform them prior to the purchase. The transaction went straight through without any phone calls.
